transfer case fluid

It's perfectly fine to use. I forget what thread, but someone asked Toyota and they said this would be an "equivalent" fluid. FWIW a friend who works at Toyota says they don't even carry the 75W-85, but instead use 75W-90 in vehicles.

I recently changed both difs and transfer case and haven't noticed any issues, smells, or anything else. Know a few who have done this for a good two changes and the same.

Fantastic! Thank you. I figured but I thought I'd ask. My 4R is my first Toyota and I want to make sure it lasts. It's got 115K on it and I'm fairly sure it hasn't been touch yet. Diffs and Tcase that is.

Hmm, I have not touched my transfer case, and I get a nasty clunk if I switch in/out of low range when the vehicle is still cold. Even in relatively warm ambient conditions. :noidea:


While the oil analysis at the beginning looks impressive, it doesn't help me a lot without a similar analysis of other oil(s) for comparison.

Off to look for more discussion of 5th gen 4Runner xfr case oil...
 
Borg Warner patented the Morse type hy-vo chain. The Aisin Seiki VF2A in my TRD ORP is the same Aisin Seiki VF2A that was in my '97 Part-time SR5. They both use a Borg Warner patented Morse type hy-vo chain.

The spec for the Aisin Seiki VF2A in my '97, was for 75w90 gear oil. Since the design of the T-case hasn't changed at all, I could use 75w90 in my new TRD ORP.

In this specific application, the Toyota LF 75 gear oil is just to eek out a small reduction in drag due to the lighter viscosity over the old 75w90 spec.

The SR5 is a Part-Time Aisin Seiki T-case with electric shifting.

The 4Runner Limited has a Full-Time Aisin Seiki T-case.

The Tundra T-case is not the same as the T-cases in the 4Runner.

Yeah, go to the Toyota parts website and look through the 10 or so dealers nearest you that do online ordering and you’ll see almost all don’t stock it and some that won’t order it.

So I have a (stupid)question re: the RP Synchromax. If you already have the synchromax in your TC and you needed to top off…could you use the reg RP 75-90w, or would there be a problem mixing the 2?
 
Doing my diffs and transfer case soon and just want to confirm that I can use the Redline product in the pic in all three?

the high values for these additives indicate that this (yes, expensive!) Toyota OE 75W gear oil has a very robust additive package — much more so than the Ravenol product. i'm sure Toyota has very good reasons for this and i don't pretend to know more than them on the subject. i'm certain, however, that Toyota knows more about this particular application than Ravenol does, and while i didn't really look at the Ravenol product in detail, as noted above while it may be the same weight as the OE spec it could be intended for an entirely different application.

re: Mobil products being "equal or better"... that's a judgment call on your part. i will say that the Toyota OE 0W20 synthetic oil is a very highly regarded product, and both my engine and t-case run the OE fluids. i do run Amsoil in my diffs, though.

EDIT: just looked more closely; obviously the MTF stands for manual trans fluid, so that would entirely disqualify using the Ravenol in your t-case. props to [MENTION=170820]MossJenks[/MENTION] above. :tea:

How many miles do you have on your 4Runner?

But the Toyota engineers must have spec’d the additives for a reason….thanks for giving us the reason.

2014 SR5 with 343K miles using Mobil Delvac Synthetic 75w90 in the transfer case and the truck spends most of its time in Montana.

The greater issue is your admission that the transfer case and differentials haven’t been serviced yet after 115K. This is neglect and outweighs the impact of any additive package in the oil.
 
Seems to be some confusion regarding SAE J300 classification system. 75W is simply a monograde oil. 75W-90 is a multigrade oil.

At 40*C 75W and 75W-90 will have the same viscosity.

At 100*C, 75W-90 will have a higher viscosity than 75W.

So, with 75W-90 you will still have the same cold weather flow as 75W, but when you get up to operating temp or even higher under temps under high load conditions the 75W-90 will provide better protection.

Toyota most likely specs 75W for the small fuel economy improvement at the cost of gear and bearing life. However, 99% of customers will never fail their differential using 75W, so it’s a worthwhile trade off in their eyes (assuming regular maintenance).

If you are towing heavy a lot or some other severe duty application, 75W-90 is a much better choice than 75W.

Redline makes MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 GEAR OIL for the transfer case - which is a direct replacement fot the Toyota brand. I use all Redline products for the Differentials and Transfer case.
 
I threw in 75W-90 into my front and rear diffs with Redline MT-LV going into the transfer case.

Conveniently I had some MT-LV sitting around from some Kia/Magna AWD clutch troubleshooting earlier in the year so it worked out.

My point still stands regarding monograde and multigrade and why Toyota likely chose 75W for the transfer case. To your point it’s also likely why they chose 75W-85 for the diffs in place of the readily available 75W-90.

I used RP Max Gear 75W-90 for front and rear diffs and RP SynchroMax for the Transfer Case. So, they will probably all blow up because I didn’t use Toyota Oil.

At the time of the release of the 5th gen, Toyota even had some little tech bulletins they printed up, explaining the reason to dealer service personnel.
