transfer case interchange between t100 and 3rd gen 4runner

Ive Been looking at options for my SAS on my 3rd gen. I want to use an 85 front axle and in order to do so I need a passenger side drop t case. I know I can get an adapter for gear driven but want to know if I can use a t100 transfer case or maybe the tail end of the t100 tranny and transfer case. I've seen the topic touched on alot but never found a definitive answer. If someone could help me out or point me in the direction of the right thread I would be very thankful. I'd rather go with gear driven t cases but I can get a parts t100 for next to nothing and make all my money back parting the rest of it out, whereas the adapter kit for a gear driven t case is like 400 bucks I won't get back. Not to mention getting a t case as well. Thanks for any help

Google is your friend :). "toyota sas t100 transfer case" got me these in two seconds, different search terms will turn up more threads.

Why are you wanting the Toy '85 axle? A Waggy 44 is exactly the right width, the right drop, and the same lug stud pattern. A custom housing from RuffStuff or TrailGear is anything you want it to be. With an '85 axle you have to play games with the transfer case and it's super narrow to sit under a lifted 3rd gen.

Not saying it's a horrible idea, but there's better axles.

Didn't even think to use those terms lol thanks I've searched google using like pretty much every other term I could think of. The 85 axle accepts the third gen rear third members(or so I've read). I want to SAS using all toyota parts and have front and rear e lockers and 4.30s. I want it to be a dd that can go pretty much anywhere.

This is my rig so far. 98 limited elocker. Rancho quick lifts up front, spring spacers and lc shocks in the rear, diff drop, 99 center console upgrade, 99 headlights, spare tire hanger delete and tow hitch tuck.

Holy cow you guys get some rust up there!

Going on record here to say the Toyota axle is the way to go for many of the reasons you stated, and a few others. I've done TWO SAS (albeit on Nissan Frontiers) using the waggoneer axle. The first time I bought a bare housing, stripped it, welded it up, powder coated then built it. Wow did I spend way too much, and in the end it was pretty good but the narrow frame rails and Cat made it a really tight fit. The second time I bought a semi complete axle and did it on the cheap, but the same issues were present. Both times I used links and coilovers. The drive shaft angle/route still isn't to my liking but I don't see any other way to do it with the left hand drop.

With the right hand drop you have more room and options. The 85 housing is probably a little on the narrow side, you may consider the Diamond brand housing, gives you an extra 3 inches in width and an inner gear oil seal to keep the birfields from taking a bath. And they are 100% Toyota based and compatible. Good luck and post LOTS of pictures!

:couch2:

My biased opinion is the mini truck axle is just too small for a modded 3rd gen 4runner.

The 80 series axle for me is the better choice, the steering knuckles and birfield joints are 30% larger and wms to wms is right at 64 inches and all come with a high pinion diff. Granted steering options are a challenge but high steer is achievable but pricey.

From my research on t-case's and transmissions I found that the 340 series transmission parts are very much interchangeable. You can swap out input shafts, front pumps, tail shafts and tail housings to build what you want.

Lol yeah I'm in the rust belt up here in ny. I actually had to rebuild the whole back half of the frame. Thanks for the help guys I'm gunna go pick up a parts t100 once I have the cash flow. So here what I'm thinkin. Toyota front axle (not sure which one at the moment) relocate the fuel tank to where the spare tire would be, t100 down pipes and exhaust (to change the exhaust to a drivers side drop), t100 oil pan and dipstick relocation, t100 transfer case swap. Sound like I'm missing anything? O and I'll be sure to post a butt load of pics along the way. Thanks again!!

It's your truck, but I just think for all that effort you could pick up a drivers drop 8" housing in any length from Ruff Stuff and be way ahead of yourself.

If i had the cash I'd be all for it. But this being an "I'm broke budget build" it kinda limits me. I can pick up a t100 with a bad frame dirt cheap in my area and make my money back parting out what I don't need. Same with the axle housing. I can find yotas with front axles and bad frames easier than I can find a Wagoneer axle and sell the rest in parts to get my money back. The ideal scenario would be having under 500 into the swap after selling all the parts from the donor vehicles, but it probably won't turn out like that
