Transfer case leak

I went to the dealer yesterday to do my 20k checkup and get the TSB new rear axle. When I picked up my truck, the dealership told me that the transfer case had a bad seal and was leaking.

It is covered under warranty but how is it leaking already? Could there be an underlying problem or do you guys think replacing a seal will be a long term fix?

What? New rear axle TSB? Number please.
I doubt the leak is a bigger issue but now you've had it fixed once any other related issues should be covered for a reasonable amount of miles.

Seals fail sometimes. It's their nature. Light leaks are there so you can replace them in time before they blow out.

Unless the defect is obvious (improper installation, etc...) there is little point in figuring out why it failed, since it could have been anything from you driving over a prior accident scene where the seal just happened to get one drop of battery acid from the road below you on just the right spot, to all the way to the vehicle having spent a little too much time without 4wd engaged. Or generally, a combination of things.

I am actually impressed that your dealer noticed that. I swear there are some dealers I can drive into for an oil change and "30 point safety inspection" with a flat tire and a missing muffler and they'd tell me all is well.

The only time I blew my xfer case seal was when I accidentally had the 4WD engaged on dry pavement. Since you don't have a center differential, you should not engage 4WD on dry pavement or any surface without any give. This will cause bind and could cause the seal to blow.

But it should be an easy fix. If you don't want to do it yourself, the dealer should charge maybe $100. Part itself is $10 or so.

Disregard the rear axle thing.... It's actually the propeller shaft. Just search on the forums you'll find it.

No,no,no, Laubage, your good. I think they even use "Propeller Shaft" in the TSB, but I always thought it was a "Drive Shaft". My statement was directed to the collective, as more of a "I am getting older everyday" type statement. Be Safe.

.

pls clarify ur statement above, driving on dry pavement with 4wd engaged and center diff locked will blow the xfer case?...or is it the other way round?..am a lil confused

I think he was saying if you have your center diff locked driving on dry pavement, you can blow your case seal. I'm actually thinking I might have done this a little while back =/ damn knee hit the button (bad spot for switch).
