Does anybody have whining transfer case in 4lo mode?
Whining noise appear at about 1500 rpm and getting louder with rpm increasing.

According to hummer owners' forums it is normal to whine for transfer case in 4lo. But what's normal for 4runner?

Mine too. However, it has gotten quieter since using it more often and switching to thicker (90w-140) synthetic gear lube.

I don't know what normal is for a 4R but mine whines in LO range too. I spent a lot of time in LO buzzing around in deep snow during our blizzard in Chicago lately with no ill effects.
I do know that under drive (LO) always makes more noise than direct drive. As long as it sounds smooth rather than popping or grinding and the lube level is correct it's OK. Also, when pulling up a grade or idling down one your noise will be more pronounced.

Every vehicle Ive ever driven in 4lo (all that had it) have whined. Toyota Nissan Chevy Ford IHC...

Just to add to the "calmness", mine whines as well. Was wondering about that recently till i came to this thread and i feel better ! :biggrin2:

Whining is normal in low gear on any 4wd vehicle I've ever owned or driven. You are getting a lot of gear multiplication in low gear, so it will always whine. Personally, I love the sound it makes.

Whine is probably due to the speed of the gears rotating for the reduction and possibly a straighter "cut" on those particular gears.

Just guessing.
