Transmission Cooler

None. The coolers holding capacity is small, when I checked the trans. level there was no change at all. A cooler is cheap insurance against trans. damage and long term longevity. I have the same cooler on my Z-28 which has a built 4L60E with a 3800 stall/convertor and it runs below 180deg. all of the time.

Nice Install!

I would like to air a word of caution on the lines. The markings (pink and blue) are done at the factory for quality checking only, and not necessarily marking the In and Out lines.

Meaning, that someone else's 4Runner may have the same markings, or they may not. They may have a completely different color marking depending on what paint pen was used that day. At least this is how it is done in the US Factories.

I agree 100%, I checked the lines before doing the install. I drove the truck to operating temps. and checked the two lines for heat, the hotter line was coming from the trans, and the cooler line was coming from the radiator cooler going back to the trans.
This is really easy to check and must be done right. Good catch on the markings, mine were matched up to the markings. Always double check!!

Sweet! Its good to see someone tackled this and was nice enough to post it here. I'm sure it will offer a bit of assistance to those lurking.

Tranny cooler install

I installed a tranny cooler and gauge last night. I will post pics later today.

I put the temperature manifold on the "Out" of the tranny to measure the hottest temp of the fluid. B&M says to measure the temp going back into the tranny from the cooler, but I didn't see the benefit of that., as it is telling me the coldest the temperature gets

I installed the temp manifold right where Mike has marked the line out of the tranny with red paint. When I cut the line, I lost about 1/2 of quart of fluid. i couldn't figure out how to get fluid back in (i know where the hole is, but didn't have a pump). So i took it to a mechanic by my house and asked them to fill it up. Combined with the addition of the cooler, they added about a quart.

I feel much better knowing what my tranny temps are now. It does bother me that a "truck" would not have a tranny temp gauge built in. They come standard on full-size chevys and fords.

CAPilot, I am sure everyone would love to see the pics, and where you put the gauge and stuff.

My T4R has an "AT Temp" idiot light, which is more than any previous vehicle I owned had (well, many were standard transmissions ;) ). I am sure AT Temp is also available on the CAN bus that you can plug into, so one of the CAN-compatible displays could potentially show this.

Either way, a cooler is cheap insurance, I agree.

tranny cooler mount

tranny cooler gauge.jpg

Here is where I mounted the gauge. Everything else is EXACTLY as Mike G mounted his.

The temp sensor is mounted where mike "painted" his hot line coming out of his tranny.

BTW - my tranny temps are 160-165 in town and 140-148 on the freeway.

Also, the line is 10MM. So if you go with the temp manifold gauge, go to the autoparts store and get the 10mm line fitting - $1.99 and replace the fittings that come with teh manifold (either 5/16 or 3/8

Good to see everything turned out on your install, it`s also good to see the trans. temps you recorded. When I get the chance I will get my gauge in, but I`m in the process of getting my kitchen remodel finished.
Were you towing your boat when you recorded those temps.? I would be curious what the trans. temps. get to when you are towing your boat in the heat.

How long does it take to warm up in the morning?

After reading all the posts I thought I would chime in. Before I purchased my 2010 4 Runner I read the fine details. According to the factory, in order to tow 5,000 Lbs the Runner should be equipped with 1) an aux. tranny cooler, 2) a brake controller.

For the record, I passed on my 03' to my son. Towed a pop up camper for 5 years, no cooler or brake control. No tranny or brake issues . I have up graded the camper and it weighs 3,700 lbs. I will be installing a tranny cooler on the 2010.

Regards, Hottoes

from the sounds of it, it sounds like we could have the "strawberry milkshake" incident if the radiator fails?

Do you think the 70268 model would work? It is 11x7.5x0.75
Instead of 11x6x1.5 that the original poster model 70264 had.

Difference is 14.4vs 13 cooling capacity.

Reason is Eventually i will mount my winch in there and think the extra depth may be an issue. However it looks like there is a lot of space.

That small of a difference will really not be a big difference in cooling capacity. When you do the install, just triple check all of your work and keep an eye out for any leaks the first couple hundred miles.

An aux. cooler is a very cheap mod. and is very easy to do.

Just ordered my tranny cooler. I do not see how you zip tied the cooler, could you post some photos of where you ran the zip ties? If not, thats fine, I will figure it out when it gets here

The kit comes with 4 flat back zip ties, I just carefully fed them through the cooling fins. Some people recommend not using them because they say they will break and fail with time. I have never had a problem on any vehicle that I have owned, and all of my trucks had the cooler mounted in that fashion.

Sorry, but I looked and I do not have any pics of the mounting ties.

Hmmmm I'm not sure I'm comfortable running them through the radiator like that. Thank you for the info, I appreciate it.

Nice gauge mount, but I want to see more pics of that vintage Bianchi you got back there...

I had a local transmission shop install my cooler a couple weeks ago because I was short on time. I took in the instructions, pictures of clean installs, and pictures of Budbuilt winch tray that I may install in the future so they would not mount the trans cooler in the way of it.

They did an absolutely horrible job. Mounted it crooked with support in only 3 places and in a place that would interfere with the winch. Left all kinds of parts floating around in the engine bay, initially had the soft hoses rubbing on metal brackets, and did not install it correctly. I had to take it back to get the most of the issues fixed. They still mounted it crooked, for I have no freaking idea, but it is in there and solid.
