Transmission Filter

Hello all, I am about to drain and refill (NOT a flush, because I heard it is not good if you wait until later) the transmission oil on my '04 V8. That means the transmission is the A750F. It has about 98K. I have read every transmission thread here and clicked on all of the links but nobody with the 5-speed has documented changing the filter. Things I want to know: Is it necessary/worth it to replace? If so what are the part numbers for the filter and gaskets? I would like all OEM Toyota.

The transmission has a metal screen filter. With metal screen filter there is no need to buy a brand new filter. You can just unbolt it from under the tranny and flush it out with brake fluid and let dry for a bit and reinstall. There are also 3-4 magnets sitting on the bottom of the oil pan that collect small metal particles. Its good to clean these as well.

Here is my thread with a bunch of pictures with the oil pan removed.

I did a complete flush, took like 14 quarts of WS fluid.

Cool, I had no idea. That gasket you had, was that original or new? If so, where did you get it? Did you use any sealant?

I purchased a new gasket at the Toyota dealership. Was less than $20

To be honest with you, we don't, if ever mess with the filters on the transmissions due to their metal nature. Even higher mileage filters seem to stay relatively good, barring some significant failure. This was something I chatted about between my older co-workers who've been working on Toyotas 20+ years.

I agree. I just did a complete fluid exchange and never touched the pan. Been almost 2 years and 30k since and it runs and shifts smoooooth. Must be the Amsoil.:wink:

If I didn't have extended warranty for another year or so I'd totally use that stuff...

We (my dad and I) are tackling this job right now, and it has sort of gone wrong .The problem was that we could not get the overflow undone (stripped it :ybrick. We decided to continue with the job and drained the pan. Now because we can't do it the right way anymore, we needed to improvise how to measure the old fluid and put the right amount of new fluid in. We drained into an animal crackers box, then measured with a liquid measuring cup. We came up with 14.5 cups, some spillage included, which equals 3.625 quarts. The service manual states 3.2 is the correct amount. We've already filled it up to 3 quarts. How much of the 4th quart should we put in? Stop at 3.2 or go to 3.625? Maybe call it even at 3.5? All of the fluid is the same temperature.

All done. Everything went smoothly after all and put we put a little over 3.5 quarts in. Anyway this is what the old fluid looked like. At 100k miles and towing a 5000lb boat, it is a good thing we changed it. 1) old 2) old 3) new
