Transmission filter

I hope that I don't get slapped with the stupid stick but here it goes. Does the filter have an purpose other than filtering the transmission fluid?

Not a stupid question. Trans filter is actually a fine mesh screen that filters debris from clutch packs or other debris, such as excess gasket sealant. It is important to check and/or replace on a regular basis (for me every 30k miles) to discover any potential problems before they become catastrophic.:fro:

I'd say if it hasn'e been changed in that long, I would leave it. New fluid has detergents that will basically clean the inside of the transmission. Old fluid is probably completely used as far as the detergents go. Changing the fluid now may clog things up.

There are 4 magnets on the trans pan that collect metal filings from the gears that should be cleaned on a regular basis. When they become ineffective because of being overwhelmed with filings, then the filings circulate in the trans. Or maybe you should follow the advice of the previous junior member's advice of doing nothing...he is probably 16 years old with lifetime experience with auto maintenance!:laugh:
