Hi! I have a 2005 SR5 and for the last week I have experiencing a lot of shuttering when I am driving. My mechanic said that it is probably a transmission problem and advised that I change the transmission fluid first before doing anything. How often am I supposed to change that fluid?

There are a few threads on this. Use the google search above and put in something like: transmission shudder torque converter.
The verbiage may be slightly different on the 'shudder'. But there are definately a few threads discissing your very issue. Just need to drain/refill your trans a few times to change out the fluid.

I ask because I picked up some Valvoline 75,000 mile max life trans. fluid yesterday at Advanced and it was not cheap for the gallon jug. $23. I do have 1.5 gallons of a Super Tech brand from Walmart, but I don't know if I should put something in my trans that costs as little as supertech. I added the pan amount of fluid with Pennzoil atf in March after changing out my trans. filter and gasket.

When did you add the new transmission fluid? And how did you do it? An '05 should be a sealed transmission that uses only Toyota WS fluid, you can't mix it with dextron or any other fluid. These sealed transmissions also have a specific way to check the fluid level and do not do well if under filled or over filled.

Partially my fault also, mistook your post as the OP, but if you're running a 3rd gen 4Runner Dextron III or higher will be fine for your transmission. You can always put a newer generation of fluid in a transmission but never go backwards. I.E if you're vehicle takes Dextron III, then IV, V, and even VI are acceptable, just a nifty thing to pass on I suppose.

Referring to atf though, I read the back of the pennzoil atf and read that it covers dex II and III, but not to use Mercon. I really want to take special care as to what fluid I put in my transmission. I don't want to make the mistake of adding the wrong stuff and getting stuck on the side of the road.

You said you had yours "drained and filled". OK but when the dealer does a tranny fluid "service" they just drain 5 quarts (out of the 13 quarts in there), and fill with 5 quarts.
That's what the T dealer did to my SR5 2005 100,000 miles V6. 5 quarts.
Tranny fluid was type IV. says on receipt - June 15 2011
Draining all 13 quarts may not be advisable.
Deal changed my filter and new gasket for $250.

this is a very old thread... but you should find a new dealer if they used T-IV in your 05!
05 4runner has the sealed trans & does NOT call for t-IV! calls for WS.
a pan drain & fill is only ~3qts, nowhere near 5.
why is draining/replacing all 13 qts "not advisable?"
$250 to change the filter & drain & fill?? highway robbery... im in the wrong business!
& you absolutely can mix WS with other fluids that are rated for WS!
