For my 03 V8, the dealer tells me they flush without dropping the pan or cleaning the screen. Is it ok to leave the pan alone and just flush? The question came up whan a mechanic walked away from the parts guy with 1 gallon of some kind of transmission fluid to do a complete transmission flush. I though the transmission took 14 quarts...

Its ok to do a flush as long as it is a fluid exchange and they don't add anything to your transmission other then the correct transmission fluid (no cleaner products they cause transmission failure). I always had the fluid exchanged on my 95 Landcruiser using a fluid exchange machine. It took 14-15 quarts of ATF. Most independant shops have exchange machines and I was able to stand there and watch while they added the 15 quarts of fluid and did the exchange. The screen is there to catch the big chunks and if you have big chunks you are screwed anyway.
The dealer told me they use a quick flush in the transmission because they see 200+ vehicles a day and they can't mess around with anything that takes a lot of time. They say it's a very agressive cleaner they buy in bulk and he is not sure about the name. As he was telling me this, my 4Runner started to back out of the parking log.....

I prefer to drop the tranny pan so that I can clean the magnet. The magnet will lose strength over time as it gets cover by layers of iron particles. But yours is to new to worry about that yet? Then I drive it for a week and replace the fluid again. I would never want anything other than AFT in there, no cleaning products ever. Then if you
