Transmission Guro's

Should I replace the torque converter along with the transmission? I have no shavings in the fluid, and didn't have any noise coming from it before I stopped driving it a few days ago.

most of the oil in the trans is in the torque converter, I allways put a new convertor when I am changing a auto. I just did the trans in my 02 the worst part was the convertor bolts. I took me 7 hours to install and probably 4 to remove the old auto trans/

I'm hoping it doesn't take me 7 hours to install it! I'm sure getting the transmission out won't be that difficult, but I'm concerned about the converter. I'm going to swap the converter, transmission, and tcase. No point in breaking the transmission and tcase apart.

that is what it took me to install mine a Toyota reman sitting in the crate. from when I walked into the shop until I drove it out. this was on a hoist with trans jack. I am a diesel mech with 30 years of experience.

Just as long as I'm on the road by Monday that's all I care about. Last night I was able to get all the linkage removed, and shifters out. I started soaking the bolt in PB Blaster, and I'll hit them again tonight. If I have the transmission out by Saturday morning I should be in good shape.

Made a little progress last night, but better than nothing. I have to let some of the bolts soak in PB Blaster before I even try to get them off.

I went ahead and removed the radio since I have a nice little gadget to install.

The fittings that I was concerned about came free tonight. I'm not sure if it was the flare nut wrenches I used, the BP Plaster, a little luck, or all three? Not that it matters. That's all the progress made tonight.

A little add insurance this time around.

Transmission 2012 4-runner limited

Hey guys/(and any ladies),
I have had my 2002 4-runner for about 8 years. My freshmen roomate was really into 4-runners. Anyways, my transmission crapped out today, at about 120K miles, on the way to work. To be honest, it was heartbreaking. My guy says he can rebuild (I think that is the correct term) for around $3,200. I will list out questions bullet for for ease of answer. Thanks for all your help.

1. Is a repaired transmission worth it? I really do enjoy my truck, although I could take better care of it.

2. Will the drive quality be changed noticeably?

3. What about a new trans?

Thanks guys!

You can buy a Toyota reman for $1770, and an extra $250 for shipping. Another $600-$800 in labor for the install, and you're still cheaper then him rebuilding it.

How do you know it crapped out?

I rode up on the interstate. Reached around 30. Mph steadly declined to 0. I made it to an offramp. I could rev the rmps, but not nothing for MPH. I assumed thats crapped out. Right?

More goodies for the swap.

Glow Shift transmission temp gauge, OEM thermostat, and o-ring.

Hey, verify all 4 position switches work before you put the tranny in! One of them can stop you from having working 4WD if they are bad. You can "clean" them by running some current through them while cycling the ball in and out. And test them with a multimeter.

The 2 on the actuator are easy to get to, but the 2 on the top are a real pain once the tranny is back in so I'd definitely just verify those are working good.

It should be good to go, but I'm going to clean it up and check everything over. I also think I'm going to pull the t-case off to make the install a bit easier.

Pulling the t-case off makes it less mass to maneuver around; however, getting to the top bolts to reconnect the t-case when the transmission is installed is a bit of a pain. If you separate them, make sure you reconnect the t-case prior to installing the crossmember so that you can lower it a bit for easier access.

I'll remember that. It's all going to depend if I get some help tomorrow or not. If I'm on my own I'll most likely separate them, otherwise I'll leave them together.

Old transmission is out, and the new one is in. Went ahead and swapped out the torque converter while I was at it. I'm done for the day at this point, and only have some minor things left.

Things still to do:
1. TC bolts
2. Rear cross member
3. Drive shafts
4. Wire harness
5. Plumb external cooler
6. Trans temp gauge
7. Flush
8. Beer
9. Test drive

Nice job. I am sure it feels good to have the big stuff done. If you don't mind post the hours it took when you are done.

Due to living in the Midwest things are a little rusty. I took my time making sure not to strip bolts, or shear them off. I've got about 15 hours in this so far, and still another 6-8 hours until I'm done. If I weren't doing so much extra stuff I would have taken me around 15 hours from start to finish.

I would have thought beer would have been first on the list.

Congrats, and I hope it works out well for ya.

I had a couple during working ours.
