Transmission Help

I have a 95' T4R. The problem that I'm having is my transmission. Every time I start up my truck, I would have problems with my transmission/ For example, I would go 55 mph at 3,500 RPMs, and it would take a while to change gears. But when I drive it for a while, and its warmed up, it stops doing that and does what transmissions would normally do. So i'm just wondering what the problem is.

i have something similar with my 93. it's hesitant to make the final shift into overdrive (especially from a cold start). i get up for work every morning and start my truck about 15 minutes early. by the time i'm done my routine i jump in and it gets up to speed and shifts exactly when it's supposed to. i check the fluid periodically just to be sure it's spot on. definitely check you transfer fluid level, there's a large bolt (your manual will show you exactly where) on the transfer case, i can barely stick my pinky finger in to feel for fluid; it should be within 5mm of the bottom of the hole. it took about half a quart til it started dribbling out (back when i first bought it) and since then it seems to shift into overdrive a little easier. i'm not exactly sure why it hesitates to begin with, but so far it hasn't caused any real problems. if anyone knows, it'd be nice to have some input from someone a bit more knowledgable on these things. i was thinking of adding some lucas stop slip to see i notice any improvement? but good post, i'm glad to see i'm not the only one

actually, i talked to my boss yesterday at work, and he said that lucas stop slip should be able to help. what's weird is that I had my transmission serviced over the weekend, changed the oil, filter and everything. but it still does it. my O/D blinks on and off though. I wonder if that has to do anything with my transmission. When O/D blinks on and off, it doesn't do anything, but if I press the O/D button, it stays on and can feel it changed. Any ideas?

what you are experiencing is standard on these transmissions - until they warm up, they do not shift into 4th. if it is shifting into 4th after warming up - then it is operating normally.

depending on the number of miles you have and the length of time since a fluid change - that is a recommended service. I replaced my filter and fluid - be sure to reseal everything correctly.

another problem i had was that the truck would only shift into "lock up" once or twice during a drive. after it downshifted out of 4th when warm - no more lockup - a easy 2mpg difference in economy on my truck. i determined that the transmission was getting too hot - and added a transmission cooler to the truck. no more shifting problems period.

i also eventually determined after the transmission cooler bypss of the radiator that my radiator was pretty clogged and i replaced that also. 186K on the original transmission right now and everything is working fine.
