Transmission jolt/clunk when switch gears

Hi everyone, I'm having an issue with my runner and was wondering if it was a one off or is it a known common issue.

When I shift from R to D, D to R, Park to R, to Park to D, it takes a few seconds to engage, but on top of that, it jolts the entire car a bit with a clunk noise.

I've searched and read of this happening when coming to a complete stop and accelerating again, and I had that as well and I was able to fix it by greasing the driveshaft zerk fittings with the wonderful help from the DIYs here on this site, but I'm still getting this jolt/clunk when shifting gears. Is this a common occurrence?

Mine clunks into drive as well. I actually have to be on the brakes pretty good to keep it from lurching forward. I think it's normal for 4th gens though.

how do i check whether or not there is play with the u joints? and how would I fix it if that were the case?

Mine does this as well, there was a thread I had started awhile back and basically the answer was to have your transfer case or transmission top off with additional fluid. So this is not an uncommon thing though with the V6 4Runner

I just purchase an '08 two weeks ago, 50K on it, I get the same issue when putting it into D, but it does not do it when going into R. Did you have your transmission fluid level checked, and it was low?

My truck only does it sometimes. If I go straight into D from P it doesn't do it. Also, if I shift from R to N then to D it seems to help as well, instead of one quick motion from R to D.

It bothered me at first. Now I don't even notice it.

Mine only does it when its in 4WD otherwise in 2WD it seems to be fine

you may have some play in the u-joints.

Try greasing your Zerk fittings in your drive shafts/U-joints. It helped eliminate my "Clunking/Lurching".

funny thing about Toyota is the clunk seems to be a "FEATURE"

My '89 22RE toy needed the Drive Shaft lubed all the time to keep the clunk sound away...

My 2003 4runner V8 is the same... its just a noise the shaft and X-fercase is most likely fine... grease it up and inspect it for any cracks or bending and forget about it.

If its the trans I would get it flushed (if it bothers you: to alleviate mind-F) but again its probable just fine. (its usually in your head)

If you think its the prop-shaft I agree that over aggressive greasing is risky but I have had very good results putting (20 + shots of grease) it just leaks out the seal until it levels out and then makes a little mess but it works!
