Transmission problems with Classic

I am considering the purchase of a 1985 Toyota 4Runner. It has an Automatic Transmission. After moving the gear shift lever from P to D, it appears to start out in 3rd gear. I can manually downshift into 2nd to get more power and acceleration then put it back into D. I am curious if these symptoms are common, or familiar, and if I have any chance of a more simple solution than replacing the Transmission.
