Funny this post is started, I was actually checking the forums to see if anyone is experiencing the problems I started to have today. I have a 2008 SR5 with just over 57K on it. When going from reverse to drive, the car would hang as if in neutral, for like 3 to 5 seconds before it went forward with a bit more speed than normal.The first time it happened today their was a bit of a clunking sound when it finally "released" into drive. This probably happened 4 or 5 times today, each time when I backed up and then shifted into drive. Very unsettling and potentially dangerous. I checked the web and found quite a few references to this, and in all cases, the dealerships were unable to duplicate and or fix the problem. Any one else experience this?
 
You described what happens in my work truck (f350) when i shift into drive from reverse without coming to a complete stop.

Not bashing just asking, are you coming to a complete stop before shifting?

175k on my 04 4runner and I've never changed or checked the transmission fluid. The tranny seems as good as when I bought it new. Also, just changed the front, rear and center diff fluids for the first time that weve owned it at 170k and all was and is fine with that. The front diff fluid was thicker and blacker then the other 2 but nothing out of the ordinary from other vehicles I've owned. My opinion is toyota must use pretty good fluid.
 
I have an '05 v8 (94,000) with the sealed transmission and performed the drain/fill and filter change this past weekend. It was easy. I just acquired the Toyota WS fluid from dealership along with filter (dealership calls it a screen when looking up the part) and gasket. I drained fluid then pulled the pan off and dumped the rest out and measured exactly what came out. I wiped out the pan and cleaned the little magnets in the bottom of the pan as there were microscopic shavings on them. Then changed filter and replaced pan with new gasket. I used a cheap fluid pump from autozone to pump exactly the amount that came out. I'll admit it's a little stressful as I was afraid of introducing dirt or something into the pan. If you can turn a wrench, use a torque wrench, measure fluid you can perform this yourself. If you search there are some good write-ups on the full fluid exchange for sealed and even non-sealed transmissions.

The reason I did this was because when I shift into drive it hesitates a little before going into gear. In fact it's so minor I doubt anyone else would ever notice it. The fluid change seems to have resolved my problem if there was one.
 
my 05 4runner v6 wont go into D... when i put it in the D position the light on the dash just jumps over to 4. plus when on the highway its like it wont go into overdrive... at 70 mph the rpms are a little over 3000 rpms. any ideas?

Every time it happened, maybe, maybe not. It has happened a couple of more times, and I have been keenly aware of coming to a complete stop. It drives fine, shifts smoothly, no smell, and no noise. Odd, and has me concerned. When your trying to back out into a the road with a gap in some busy traffic, and quickly trying to pop back in drive and scoot on down the road, is it gonna hang and get me in some trouble, or worse an accident.
