Transmission problems

New member with a question. I have a 2001 4runner automatic with 192k. Lately until the transmission warms up it doesn't want to shift. I have to peddle it to get it to shift. After about 5 minutes it shifts fine. I had a transmission flush (so I was told) but made no difference. I am thinking it might be the filter. Any input would be appreciated.

At what speed or gears does this occur? Will it shift into second? If reved to a certain rpm will it shift? About where on the temperature gauge does it get war enough to shift?

It seems to shift into second ok but runs up to about 3000 rpm before it shifts into third. I can make it shift sooner if I peddle it a little. I haven't looked at the temp gauge but it takes a little longer when it is cold really cold. And yes, it does get really cold in Arizona.

Sounds like its just the factory control that keeps it from shifting into third until it hits a certain temperature or about 2500-3000rpm. I notice the same thing occur and its always exactly the same if I rev to 2500 it will shift into third and the moment the temp needle hits the first line at Cold it will shift as well. I thought this was a transmission problem at first but after seeing how it acts and others saying this is a factory transmission safety feature I realized its not a huge deal. Anyway hope this helps

This becomes the norm for the 4runner. Either let it warm up to 130F before driving or learn to live with it shifting at 2800rpms from second to third.

Thanks everyone. I have had the time to look at other posts on this forum and your answers are about the same. At 192k I was getting a little concerned. I guess it should be good for another 100k. My wife has had it for the last 150k and never mentioned it. She got the new rav4 and kicked the 4runner back to me. To tell the truth, I think I got the better deal.

x4, mine does the same. Thought it needed a flush n new filter but if your guy's does it too then its normal lol.. And yes i noticed once it got past the C mark it shifted normal
