Transmission Questions

Hey guys, I just did a transmission pan drop and flushed the whole system. All went pretty smooth except for a few things.

- Magnets had a few metal shavings on them. Is my transmission ****ed?

- The dipstick reads at "HOT" when the car has been sitting idle for 12 hours. But when I turn it on, go through each gear and turn it off, sits at "COOL" - is this normal?

- I replaced the in-place gasket with a rubber one and gasket silicone sealant. Getting the screws back in was a bit of a pain and I don't think I overtightened them but it was tight getting them back in - what is the worst case scenario of overtightening the screws and should I be worried?

Other than that no leaks, shifts smooth as butter and job well done if you ask me.

I haven't had enough experience with these pans to know if it's an issue or not, but I know with the actual gaskets, the torque is pretty low because too tight will cause the area around the holes in the pan to bend up into the soft gasket messing up its ability to seal. Needless to say it can cause a worse leak than you may have had prior. Keep an eye on it, but if it's not leaking, you're fine. Worst case scenario is that it starts leaking and you may have to rig up a way to stop it from leaking which may include replacing the pan.

Also, what do you mean by "shavings?" Metallic debris is extremely normal, but it's usually just a dark paste-like substance, with very minimal visible pieces of metal. Most of the time, any larger-than-paste pieces occur earlier in the vehicle's life because they're from the breaking in period when it was new. Those magnets are positioned strategically to catch those early fragments usually where the fluid all lands in the pan in order to catch them the first time through and prevent them from recirculating as much as possible.

There was a lot of that black gunk on the magnets and then like one or two metal shavings (3-4 cms).

Okay thanks for the heads up with the gasket, I will take a look at it every 100 miles or so to make sure it isnt leaking, would hate to redo that job :nono:
