Transmission shifter fixed

On my 98 I just bought, the transmission shift lever would flop around really bad when shifting gears. Having other 4runners and a 98 Tacoma, I knew this wasn't right. I bought the truck anyway and that was one of the small things I knew I would have to fix. Turns out it costs me 5.00 and a couple of hours time. The fix is to replace the 4 shifter bushings. They are small soft plastic bushing inserts that keep the shift lever tight. Nobody likes a floppy shifter. My bushings had completely crumbled and turned to powder. Easy fix. Just thought I would throw that out there for you guys with floppy levers.
The Part number for the 4 bushings is 90385-11003. Special huge Thanks to GHARP57 for supplying that number. Works great!

How odd that you mention this as I had just ordered the bushings last night for my own truck. Was it a pain to get the bottom ones?
 
I wish now I had taken pictures and completed a write up on it. But it was dark, and I was in a hurry.
The top was easy to get to. Just remove the console and the shift interlock switch on the side. No need to take the switch all the way loose, just take the three screws out to provide a little movement to slide the long bolt out that holds the transmission shifter in place. Two bushings go in each end of this part. It is attached to another pivot point located below the shifter connectors. In order to get this bolt out, I had to take out the 10 mm bolts that hold the entire assembly down and lift off the tunnel. Pulling one of the c clips and sliding out the shift lever from the shift linkage arm allowed me to move the whole shift lever handle out of the way. The bottom bolt is accessible by removing the rubber protective dust boot. I pulled two of the rear grommets loose and that allowed me to pull the boot down enough to get the bolt out and replace the bushings. Be careful not to tear that rubber boot. It is great quality and mine was still in really good shape but they are old. After installing the new blue bushings, my shifter was as firm as new...... :jump::becky:

Anyone know if this is the same part number for a 2001?
 
I replaced mine in late 2k @80k miles bought it had 74k miles early 2k.
I made my own out white nylon material with a lathe. 3-18 @365-70k mi
they were still tight when it got rolled n totaled.
LOL, Had full mechanical drawings till 4-14 when a EF5 Tornado took them.
It can be done and it works, when needed for my 01 I'll make a set with drawings again.
 
In the last year mine has become very sloppy. Sometimes it doesn't even want to lock into drive and will pop in when I hit a bump in the road. Time for bushings.
 
shifter bushing replacement

I have a 2000 2wd SR5. I thought I read that their are 2 bushings with 2wd, and 4 with 4wd. Has anyone replaced shifter bushings on a 2wd? Was it necessary to go under the truck and disconnect the linkage as I've seen elsewhere in this forum?

Yes, the 2WD also has the link that needs to be undone. It's really not hard so don't let it scare you, it's literally one nut that comes off. It just connects two rods together so it can shift from P, N and D is all.
 
to replace the bushings, I did end up unscrewing the linkage underneath the truck. It was easy. And just unplug the white harness after unscrewing the 4 Phillips head screws and 4 10mm screws ( the 1 socket I didn't have). So much easier to replace the bushings with the shifter out of the truck. Their was nothing but bushing dust left. Had to buy a flex magnet tool as well to recover a dropped socket. But replacement went well overall. Nice n tight now. :cheers:
