Transmission Whine

My 2014 had the annoying whine. It finally went away at around 10k miles. Never did figure out what is was. It did not inspire a lot of confidence in a new vehicle and was embarrassing when others road in the 4runner. I actually added some sound deadener to try to quiet it. I guess whatever it was just needed time to break in. If your whine is like mine was it got louder as the rpm increased and got lower with each shift of the transmission until the rpm increased again although it could also be heard somewhat at idle.

Has anyone heard more about this sound?? I have a 13 limited 4x4 that makes the same sound with 55k on her. Pisses me off when I hear it and then its all i can hear.
I like the truck, but i might have to sell it if there is no cure... i cant take that kind of stuff.

This is Bull$hit.
How can toyota say it's normal operation when some have it and some do not.. Something got jacked up at the factory, and this needs a recall. Is it only the 4x4 transmission that is doing it or all of them?

2010 here with 115k miles. I have the whine. It is most pronounced on low speed high rpm uphill climbs, and when it downshifts going down a hill (low speed high rpm)
It seems to be related to the transmission as it occurs while in Drive but not so much in Neutral.
I changed out the transmission fluid with WS hoping it would help the noise, but no change.
For now, I am going to drive it, but I watch the transmission closely. I have several noises that seem to be coming from the transmission (Faint grinding noise when in Drive (no noise in Neutral), Faint jingle noise when in Drive (no noise in Neutral), and this high pitch whine when driving lower speeds/high rpm. I do believe the noise exists at higher speeds but it is masked by the road/wind noise.
Any ideas on what this is? I am going to price out transmission replacement costs just in case so I am prepared to do that if necessary... Truck drives and shifts nicely, so I am not going to do anything until there are more symptoms.

Interesting you say faint jingle noise plus whine. I have both on my 2012.
However, it had been solid from 54K to 98k, no issues other than faint annoying noises. Goes 9 hours at a clip. Hint: it's not pulley or belt related. Still could be an accessory that is engine driven though. I haven't gotten the stethoscope out yet, but may do so soon.

I've noticed this whine on both my 2011 4Runner and my 2015 Sienna. I also switched out the transmission fluid in the 4Runner to Amsoil by doing the service change repeatedly over four consecutive oil changes (20K miles). I didn't notice any change in the whine with the fluid change, but my change was gradual.
At this point I've chalked it up to normal Toyota noise and just turn on the radio if it's bothering me. My wife isn't complaining about it in the Sienna.

Haha I have broken out the stethoscope on mine already. The grinding noise is definitely coming from the transmission main housing. I have not been able to locate the jingle or whine.
I am monitoring the noises but not going to take drastic action. I've not noticed a change so I too take it as just the way this Toyota sounds.

I've been reading various threads for about a month now about transmission whine related to my 2011. The whine I was hearing started suddenly and seemed to correspond to wheel speed. However I had only heard it in 5th gear at 40-65 mph. I recently drove FL To NY and back and 20 hrs of it really started driving me nuts. I did some downhills in N and the noise didn't abate as engine speed slowed. My wife can't hear it, so it may not have been noticeable to someone who doesn't drive the truck every day. At times it felt like I could feel the sound in the floor of the truck...had me thinking something in the driveline might be bad (u joints?).
Yesterday I swapped both front bearings, rotors, and pads. The old bearings felt fine to me in hand...smooth rolling, no play. The rotors were rusty, but not grooved and pads had about 75% material left. This truck spent some time in VA in its early life, so corrosion made the job somewhat challenging. Kudos to the Toyota engineers for making the bottom of the spindle come apart with a couple bolts rather than needing to disassemble the ball joint. I thought that was a pretty cool setup once I got those bolts moving without breaking them (whew).
Anyway, lots of cleaning, sanding, painting, anti-seize, and reassembly later the noise is gone. We'll see whether it comes back as things wear in. The reason I post here is that I wasn't at all sure that this was the solution, especially when everything I replaced seemed fine. If any of this sounds like what you're hearing, it might be worth swapping out these front wheel parts.

I have been having transmission grinding/huming noise, when:
Drove for a while and when come to stop, the grinding sound start. When put in neutral, the sound and low level vibration go away. I noticed this sound only happened after a long distance drive, or long and hard drive in the city.
I
Have appointment with dealer next week hopefully they could find something.
It’s 2015 TEP with 60k, regularly maintained by dealer and myself.
Anyone with similar issues?
