travel tips for London, Paris, Spain....
ill be traveling to London for work in January and will combine some personal time too. i have an idea of what i want to do but looking for tips for those who've been to this part of Europe.
Dates
Arrive Jan 8 in London at 9am. Leave London Jan 29 at noon.
Work
Jan 11-15
Jan 18-22
i have to fly in/out of Heathrow and will maintain a hotel in the center of London from Jan 8-24. The first weekend/week i arrive ill get settled and spend all of my time in London.
My first weekend of free time will be the eveneing of Friday Jan 15 through Sunday the 17th. i was hoping to hop on a train and head to brussels or amsterdam or both since the train switches in brussels. if i can only pick one which one should i do? or do i spend a day in each? it looks to be about 5hrs from Amsterdam back to London and not sure yet how late trains run. im leaning more towards Amsterdam but ive heard great things about Brussels. how far in advance do you have to book a train? i wont really know my schedule until i start work on the 11th.
from the 22nd until 29th i am all on personal time. i plan on taking a train to Paris, spend a couple days there. then fly to Barcelona until the 28th and from Spain back to London and home. flights appear to be close in price to a train and 1/3rd the time.
my first issue. ill have 2 bags most likely. one wih all of my work clothes. one with personal stuff. i am not going to want to drag luggage all over town. since ill be taking a train to Paris should i take a cab to the airport first then drop my one bag off for them to hold? looks to be about $60USD for the week. im going to check with hotel to see if they have bag hold options. or if im going to do bag drop at airport should i fly to spain first then paris, and back to London saving me a weird back tracking trip to airport.
is the train in Paris easy to / from tourist area to airport? does spain have easy trains from airport to city. i have a friend/acquaintance but i wont be staying with her. i do not want to get a car and hoping to travel all by train and my 2 feet.
besides obvious tourist stuff. what should i not miss? will the Louvre in Paris be crazy busy this time of year? how long should i spend in Paris vs Barcelona. since my flight leaves at noon on the 29th i need to be back in London evening of the 28th to be safe. is the Heathrow airport safe enough to sleep in saving me on a hotel that night.
for hotels, i plan on finding hostels to save on cost. i really just need a place to sleep. nothing fancy.
