TRD ... Borla Exhaust differences...

I have searched thru the forums and I have found posts that claim Borla makes the exhaust for TRD...and some that claim they are different...

I have a brand new 05 Sport V8 and I want exhaust ;) My only problem is...Borla or TRD? I found a post saying that the TRD was a little quieter with no 2k drone.

I definitely do not want a drone....I dont really care if its loud or quiet...I want a little performance increase...so i'm leaning toward the TRD.

I am looking for opinions of others with TRD and Borla....

Thanks in advance!

Well,
From what I can see, the TRD exhaust has welds at the split in the exhaust where it goes from 1 to 2 pipes. I had TRD headers on my 2k 4runner, and the part that kept failing was the welds!! I went through 3 sets, luckily under warranty, but still! I had a Borla on my 2k, and had no issues with that one, so I went with the Borla on my v8 04. It is different in that it is a true dual from the muffler back, so it has no welds that can fail, plus I happen to like the clamps they use, others may not. I dont notice a drone, so it may be a subjective thing. They are definately not the same, so I dought they are both made by Borla. You can usually find both on ebay.

I've got the Borla exhaust and it definitely has a drone around 2000 rpm. It is not that loud to me, but my wife thinks it is. Have you looked at the Magnaflow kit? Single exaust, may not be as loud as the Borla or the TRD but still give you a performance increase. I have been waiting for someone to get it on this forum and give some feedback.

Hey guys, I heard a sound clip of the magnaflow on a runner and didn't like it. It sounds like a car. I want a beefy trucky rumble. Any suggestions? Prices? Oh yeah, I have a V6. That'd probably make it a little tougher.

i have a magnaflow on mine and eventually when i find the time i'm gonna toss it. the sound is ok around 14-15k rpm but in the other ranges it sounds weak.

i've yet to hear a clip of a 4th gen v6 but people who have put on a flowmaster and borlas have said that they really like it. borlas will probably run you 600-700 as its a complete system while a flowmaster could cost 100-200 depending on which one you get and what kind of tip you go with. look into spintech mufflers too as ive read some good things about them. theyre comparable to flowmasters, if not better depending on who you talk to.

also, check out www.exhaustsoundclips.com. there are some clips of a v6 4.0L jeep with a flowmaster 40 and 50. i imagine that our v6 would sound similar to that. one thing to remember, the v6 will not sound like a v8 no matter what we do.

Yikes, I hope you meant something lower than 14-15 K RPM!

Either that or you only heard it once.......

How true. :D

I like my Borla, especially at flat out throttle. Talk about moving out. The 2K drone, is kinda like my office mate smacking his gum, I just tune it out.

I can't open the clips for the flowmasters but does it sound burly? I guess I just want it to sound less performance and more truck. And $200 sounds like a great deal. Is it a full cat-back? Size of piping? Which is better: 40 or 50? Difference? Street legal? Will it be able to pass a smog test in CA? Sorry I have so many questions.

the file can be opened if you have an mp3 player. it sounds pretty good. the 40 is a lot louder than the 50. the 50 is supposed to be the mellower of the two. the guys on that board recommend getting the super 40 as opposed to the original 40. the super 40 has a more refined sound and is a lot quieter inside than the original 40. if you can, try to listen to the clips because they have both the 40 and 50.

i dont even think flowmaster makes a catback for the 4runner, the 4th gen at least, only borla and magnaflow that i know of. all i have is a muffler spliced in along with the original pipes. it'll be the same if you get a flowmaster, theyll just take the muffler and weld it into your current system.

Sounds good. I think I will go with the Flowmasters. 40, right? Anything else I need to tell the muffler guys? Thanks AGAIN chiefiji ;)

if you think the sound isnt loud enough, you can look into chopping off the resonator if you havent already. let us know how it goes man!

I think I'm going to get the 50. Last question, it is street legal, right? I live in CA. Will I pass the smog test?

i'm not positive, but i havent heard of anyone not passing their smog test becuz of replacing their muffler. just to be sure, i kept my stock muffler.

have you installed the 50 yet? let us know how it goes.
