TRD Cold Air Intake Question...

Hello all.

I just received my TRD Cold Air Intake kit after a 3 month backorder... Watching the install vids and seeing pics online I've noticed that my top lid does NOT have the white filter I've seen on all other CAIs... Did anyone else's come without that filter???

my top lip doesnt have the carbon filter in the trd intake.

If you're talking about the white mesh carbon filter, the TRD intake does not come with it.

That’s the carbon trap. It’s a California required smog device and is usually checked visually by a California Smog tech. Outside California your mileage may vary as to whether to ever noticed that it’s gone.

3 Month back order? I ordered one in June and had it in about a week. And the top lid does have one of those white filters. I think its removable, but never tried.

It should be plastic riveted in place if it has one.

The ones shipped to California will have them in place. And yes, it is a significant restriction on airflow. And yes, a California smog tech will look to see if it’s there.

Unless you consider more noise a benefit, you’re not really going to see any.

I have one installed on my 17TRDP. It came with the carbon filter and I removed it.

In my experience, MPG varies based on driving style and road conditions. That said, I did see minor increase in MPG as long as make normal throttle changes. I run a Sprint booster and keep it set at Sport 2 as this is best balance for my driving style.

Is there a documented difference/advantage to running the CAI? Search the forum as there at least two members who completed before and after Dyno comparisons and noted minor HP/Torque increases. It just comes down to what you want to install and enjoy the ride.

Is it loud? Under WOT, hell yes. Under normal driving....don't even notice it.

Someone did an advanced study of airflow w the hydrocarbon filter in/out, and found it did not affect power at all.

Further, from my extensive tuning experience of other stock vehicles, the air intake is usually not close to the limiting factor in power. The engine and airflow are almost always XX% overbuilt for endurance and futureproofing if they want to add cheap power for a midcycle refresh.

The bottleneck these days is always tune, and Air Fuel Ratio.

Anything aside from tune basically either robs low-end power to move it up top, or adds low-endnbt removing up top thru more back oressure.

Seriously other than that...So far no gas mileage gains that I can see. (I'm on my 4th tank and it's a wash so far)
It is a bit noisier.
It feels like it has a bit more pickup - not sluggish when I mash the pedal, but that is really kind of unmeasurable with the human leg and subjective. Others have used a more scientific approach (dyno) and claim to see a few HP gain.

Just checked and yes, mine has it. Looks like plastic pins melted flat to create little keepers. Easily removed, not so easy to re-installed once you pull it off.

Installed it last week. Biggest improvement I've noticed is that with all the windows down, I don't get that sulfur smell coming in thru the back window. Like NOT at ALL!!! YAY! (I think I read a thread somewhere that the white filter caused this)

It does feel a bit more responsive, mostly at speed (65-75mph) it feels much less sluggish than before when you need to pass someone.

I'm at about 20-21mpg with the a/c on if I don't get on it too bad... maybe picked up 1-2 mpg. More time (more tanks of fuel) will tell...

My lid does have those plastic tabs where the white filter would sit, that's why I thought I was missing something. I ordered the kit off of amazon back in May. It was $389.
