TRD Cold Air Intake

Hi All

I was looking at ways to improve the air flow intake on my 2016 4Runner TRD Pro. I came across this.

TRD Cold Air Intake (CAI) 5th Gen 4Runner & FJ Cruiser, CAI 5th Gen

I have a TRD Pro but I don’t have this in my truck. Was it supposed to come with this or is this a aftermarket product Toyota sells and does it really improve performance? The only real difference I really see is a pretty box, a airflow gage and maybe a higher quality filter?

Does anyone have this and does it improve performance?

Thanks

yes it should have it, it does increase HP !! :flame:

I bought mine used. Maybe the previous owner took it out. ☹️

TRD PRO’s do not come with a TRD CAI.
These are Toyota (performance) aftermarket parts.

If it had one and now it doesn’t, someone installed it and then removed it. Period.

Ok thanks for the clarification. Since I bought mine used I’m not familiar what all came with the stock TRD Pro.

But I do kind of wonder if they are already getting top dollar for TRDs, how come Toyota didnt include the TRD CAI in with the original package?

Because it doesn’t do anything other than bling and a reusable/ cleanable air filter… see sig

All 5th gen 4Runners come with a CAI, just no TRD markings or reuseable filter.

Mainly wanted more induction noise if I could go back I would have just removed the sound resonators and capped them.

The design of the TRD intake isn't as secure IMO compared to the OEM and replacing the air filter is more difficult as it's under tension on both sides with only 2 locking tabs vs the 4 on OEM (which also feels more secure)

Here's what it sounds like from and iPhone X

So it seems I can get the same performance as a CAI by putting in a high quality air filter?

I have a TRD CAI on my T4R with an OEM air filter.

You already have a high quality air filter if you are using an OEM filter.
Toyota engineers designed these engines with the parts that came on them from the factory.
Look, if you want to put a gauze air filter on it and think you are gaining something, realize what you are giving up.
Filtration of air into your engine.

YMMV
