OK I just got back from a 20 miles drive on the interstate. I don't know if it was the big ass OVERSIZE TRD filter i just install or the weather being 58 degree today? but the 4R seem to perform and drive a lot better then before! It seem like the motor was running full force at WOT without any restriction! also I notice the 4R was pulling a lot harder to redline. You just have to experiment it for your self. ( I fill like I'm trying to sale TRD filter!)

Per Partznet the <B>TRD 00602-90915-007</B> Oil Filter, Fits <B>OE #’s: 90915-YZZB5, 90915-20004 </B>

Now the FRAM cross reference for the latter two part numbers are:

<B>TOYOTA 90915-20004 = FRAM PH3614

TOYOTA 90915-YZZB5 = FRAM PH16 </B>

<I>Interestingly enough, FRAMs site quotes the "3614" for both the V8 and the 4.0L V6 VVTi.</I>

Ergo. it appears that if you want a larger filter and can't find the TRD, that means we can go with the larger PH16 or comparable filter for larger capacity based on the cross refs...

i put in 1/4 of a qt when i change the filter but when i got home i had to put in another 1/4 qt so not much.

<B>UPDATE:</B> I just spoke to the service folks at both local dealers in town about the filter size discrepancy and they seem to concur: While either can be used, they recommend if you are running with the smaller 90915-20004 (PH3614) size filter, you should change to the larger 90915-YZZB5 (PH16) size (or TRD) filter at your next oil change...

Apparently the <I>-20004</I> is what came installed, but they are phasing them out and current cross refs end up having it replaced with the smaller filter. ie; if you go to quick change place, they may errantly install a PH3614 or equivalent and they should be using a larger PH16 or equivalent filter! I just had my oil changed and I'm going to request the filter be swapped out...

Just note that you should always run the PH16 or equiv. filter (or the TRD) and not the smaller PH3614 for best results.

Hm...interesting. I had the 20004 filter when I bought my car. When I had it changed the first time, a B5 was put in, but the last 3 times, they've been using a D3 (I believe this is the V8 filter). Is the D3 bigger than the B5?

Any idea why most sites list that part number (00602-90915-007) for the Land Cruiser and not the 4Runner??

Oh great.. another part to throw into the pot... Ironically, Fram's site shows a PH3614 for the V8 Land Cruiser too.. what gives? That seems like an awfully small filter for such a large engine, especially under a heavy load. So much for aftermarket filters...

This should probably be moved to the MAINTENANCE board...

I just ordered my TRD Oil Filters. I couldn't resist the low price at Toyota/Mitsu of Goldsboro... the lowest prices anywhere and I did quite a bit of looking around last night. I can't wait to get them in.

I'm not very familiar with changing my oil or the filter on the 4Runner but when you took off the filter ( assuming all you had to do was unscrew it, correct?) did the oil leak out and that's why you had to add some more??

There are three reasons for this.
1) When you unscrew the old filter, it is going to drain out the old oil that is in it. Hopefully you can keep this in the oil pan or in the filter and not all over the engine.

2) The new filter has no oil in it when you put it in...so therefore it will use some of your engine oil to fill it up.

3) The TRD filter is bigger and can hold more oil than the smaller stock filter so you will have to add more oil to the engine to compensate for the volume of the filter being larger.

The combination of these three components will show up on the dipstick as less oil in the resevior and will require you to "top off" the oil after the change. Hope this helps

honestly, I'd just wait until the next oil change. but you'd want to (ideally) top off with whatever oil was already in it...or so I'd think...

I don't know why mostly all of these big V8 and V6 these day come with tiny little oil filter about the same size as what most 4cyl use? This TRD filter is the BIGGEST filter I have seen out their for the 4R. Their is not one aftermarket filter out their made for the 4R that is as big as the TRD filter. it look like it should have came from the factory with it on!

I took a 70 miles trip yesterday back and forth and notice a 1 to 1.5 MPG increase with the TRD filter also!!:boink:

If I am reading this thread right, just by changing the oil filter the following has happened;

1. Smoother idle
2. No cold shake
3. No knocks
4. No leaks
5. Better acceleration and torque
6. An increase in MPG

I guess I am going to have to get me a truck load of these 'miracle' filters and start my own info-mercial on late night TV.:dancin:

I'll be rich in no time!!!

Hehe... yeah, most of those things that people say they've noticed are more than likely by chance or by placebo effect.

The OEM filter is very effective in design, and I have no doubt you'd notice a difference in reliability/etc after using it or something like a Mobil 1 as opposed to some junk like a Fram. But instant improvements in all of the above categories? Not likely unless there was a serious defect with the previously installed filter.

I have no doubt that most of those qualities are actually improved. But most likely to the point that even a computer would have a problem detecting the variance, much less a live person.

Has it been physically confirmed that this BIG TRD oil filter will fit the V8? If not then can someone please provide the outer diameter and length of the filter? I am still skeptical that there is enough clearance; and I would really like to try these.

Hahaha...you guys beat me to it. Placebo effect for sure...it is impossible for a larger oil filter to increase performance. Bigger oil filters will just keep your oil cleaner, longer. DSM's have been doing this for years, using 3000gt oil filters instead of the standard Eclipse/Talon. It is safe to say your engine would feel and idle smoother after a couple thousand miles or so with the larger filter compared to the smaller not filter efficiently anymore. Maybe you could consider that performance, but given both the stock and TRD filters were both clean, your truck would perform the same.

I would have to say that a 'bigger' oil filter does not necessarily equate to a better oil filter. Yes, it will increase the total amount of oil in the system, but not much. And how it filters is determined by what the manufacturer uses for a filter media, and how it is constructed. Some one earlier in this thread made the comment that WIX/NAPA actually made the TRD filter in question. I don't know if this is true, but I believe, in other oil filter threads, there have been less than flattering reviews of WIX filters. I'm not saying that the TRD filter is no good, but without more info on its internal construction, its quality is an unknown element. I would certainly like to see some test info on it from one of the oil/filter test sites.
