TRD Pro aftermarket stereo

Has anyone replaced the factory head unit with an aftermarket one in a TRD Pro, and if so, what did you do for the dash kit?

I ordered the Scosche 2014 4Runner dash kit. It fits perfectly, but it is silver which doesn't match the rest of the TRD Pro interior at all. I bought some vinyl wrap that matches nearly perfectly, but it's been a huge pain to get it applied in a way that doesn't look amateur.

Any suggestions?

I wish it was as simple as just black. It doesn't really come across too well in pictures but it's black with little flecks of sparkly stuff.

Here's an example (not mine, but the same color):

I'm sure it has an actual technical name, but I am not sure what it is. It's fairly subtle, but I don't think any straight black paint would match up very well. Unless there are some fancier paints that I haven't come across?
 
For something like that, you need to use wrapping vinyl. You will never get regular vinyl to stretch and stay with out bubbles.

But the color selection for wrapping vinyl is limited, so you may have to go with a contrasting color or have a shop print the color you want. Or have a body shop shoot it if you want an exact match.
 
Thanks for the tips. I went ahead and got the vinyl applied to the new dash kit for now. It looks mostly ok but there are a few spots I just couldn't make look right. Once the head-unit arrives and I get it installed, I'll determine if I need to make some adjustments.

came out good, but i'd spend the $50-100 that a local paint shop would charge and have them paint it to match the old piece.
 
Agreed... "good" but not "great". I ordered a second dash kit so I can take it around town and look for a better solution. This first one will have to make do until I find better results elsewhere.
 
How does that vinyl wrap work.? Heat gun to get it in all the recessed areas?
Also did you ever get the second faceplate painted? And lastly what new head unit are you running [MENTION=121331]BustedPretext[/MENTION].

Yes, the vinyl wrap is applied with a heat gun. The color was a great match, but I just couldn't make it look very professional so I scrapped it.

I ended up taking the dash kit to a body shop. For $65 they painted it to exactly match the rest of the interior, and they even gave me a little bottle of the leftover paint for touchups. The color match is perfect.

As for the headunits... I tried a couple. The first try was the Pioneer AVIC 8100 NEX. For a "flagship" model it left a lot to be desired. The audio quality and the screen/display were good, but I really didn't like the interface. It was also pretty buggy on being able to handle mp3s on a SD card. It would actually play half a song and then skip to another song. It also had no concept of reading the ID3 tag's track listing, so it played albums in alphabetical order instead of track order.

After sending the Pioneer back, I just settled for an old JVC KWNT810HDT. It definitely shows its age in interface and gps quality, but other than that is is pretty solid and sounds great. I hope to replace it relatively soon assuming some better models are released next year.

entune is the only thing I don't like about my Trail, and I never thought to paint the kit.

Also have you considered Kenwood for a new stereo? I like the one in my current rig, and soon as I get into a TRD-P, I'll prob go the same route.

I considered a Kenwood DNN992 but some of the reviews scared me away from it. It sounded like it had fantastic GPS but everything else was sub-par. Which model do you have and what are the pros that make you prefer it?

I really wanted to try the gigantic 9" Alpine X009, but I wasn't confident enough in my ability to chop up the dash kit to make it fit and still look good. Maybe they will release a custom 4Runner version like they did for the Tundra.

I have the Kenwood DNX6990HD

Pros- The Garmin GPS, Ipod/ Iphone capabaility, being able to watch the rearview camera either split screen with GPS, or with the radio. Or you can watch the backup camera fullscreen (if towing) Your passenger can watch a DVD on the front screen too.

Cons- I have not seen a new update in a year or so.
Interface is pretty quick, but I feel could be faster.
On this particular model, you can't dim the display. You can change the background and display color or customize a custom color, but ya can't dim it.
