TRD Pro Fox Shock Clunk

As far as I thought, the 2021 TRD Pro's had the new shocks preinstalled? Not sure why yours is making the same clunking noise? Could it be something else?

Definitely a clunking and you can feel it on floor board at low speed over bumpy street or uneven pavement. I pulled the skid plate off and video taped it with GO PRO. You can hear it clearly and I feel it. The FOX shocks are the newer version. I stumbled on this issue after googling it. Seems it’s been a long term issue. I had a 2017 TRD OFF ROAD. NO ISSUES. I also had a 2021 venture NO ISSUES. I traded it to get brand new 2021 TRD PRO. *♂️. If Toyota can’t get to the bottom of it I will sell it and go back to. TRD off road version. I have first service on Tuesday.

I had the issue on my 2019 Pro but got the Fox shocks switched out with the new 2021 redesign and the issue has been resolved. It's probably due to something else. Toyota is very good with replacing parts and you're under warranty so I wouldn't sweat it. Let the dealership worry about it.

I think I'm having the clunk. Happens only at slow speeds and I mostly notice in my parking garage. I love my 4R, but I know at the moment there is no way a dealer with be able to replicate it unless they drive in my parking garage. I don't know if I have the energy to deal with it. I might just sell the 4R and take advantage of all the crazy prices and the amount of equity I have in it.

You could more than likely video the sound from inside the cab and outside the cab with your phone. If you capture a good enough video and sound they will most likely use that instead of trying to reproduce the issue.
Hope this helps.

I just bought a 17K mile 2019 trd pro and when the temp goes below 30 i get the clunk. Definitely temp related. Not sure if it means shocks needs to be replaced.

Most likely. some clunk, some dont....mine drove me crazy....most noticable at slow speed like in parking lots. They should replace both sides.

Hey all! So glad I found this thread..
I have a 2020 Tacoma, but recently put fox 2.0's on all corners. after finding this thread and reading every post I'm certain I'm experiencing the same issue.
I was able to get a video of it, and just wondering if anyone can confirm this is a similar "hollow clunk" you all are hearing

2021 TRD Pro clunk fox shocks

Hello. I post here infrequently but figured I would pass along some new info on my 2021 TRD PRO FOX shock issue. Last issue I had was a clunk coming from floor board. It was the drivers side fox shock was bad. Toyota replaced it under warranty. I drive a lot. Not hard on the truck. Today at 25k I went for oil change and I mentioned a noise / clunk/creak from rear when backing and turning out of the driveway. Turns out the passenger rear fox shock is bad also. They ordered the part and it is also being covered. I have to say this is putting a bad taste in my mouth. I had a 2017 TRD off-road basic model cloth seats etc and NEVER had an issue. I sold it at 74000 miles and got a 2021 venture and no issues. Was not happy with the color and I wanted the PRO in magnetic gray and finally got it brand new with 4 miles. I’m kind of wishing I kept my 17 basic TRD OFF-ROAD. I definitely have the “new” design. I checked. Anyone else having this or just defective parts / bad luck. Thanks

The normal TRD OffRoad or Venture doesn't have the fox shocks, so it won't have the clunk issue. They use the normal black OEM Tokico shocks that come on the SR5 too, so comparing them is erroneous. The TRD Pro Fox shocks are a considerable upgrade over the basic shocks on other models like you had, so if the dealer is replacing it under warranty, why go through the hassle of swapping the whole vehicle? If it comes down to it, you could always sell the TRD Pro Foxes and go with a better aftermarket solution (Fox 2.5s, Bilstein 6112/5150) and still have a considerably better suspension set up than the crap OE shocks that come on the other models.

I have a 2019 Pro. Both rear shocks were replaced under warrantee and now one of the new ones is making a crunching noise when there's some load in the vehicle and it compresses (like when I go dispersed camping), and it's no longer under warrantee. So count me in on quite unimpressed.

I have a 2019 Pro and all of my Fox shocks were replaced under warranty. The fronts were replaced and then another clunk developed on the passenger side so the front passenger was replaced a second time. Both rear shocks were also replaced. If you crawl underneath you'll see its most likely the shock scraping on the plastic surround. Since my last replacement, all has been good. I guess, in Toyota's defense, it's not a Toyota specific part. The shocks were designed by Fox to Toyota's specifications. Doesn't seem like Fox did a very good job with the design. It was supposed to be a problem with the 2019 and 2020 shocks and was supposed to be resolved by 2021.

Yeah I had that on the two that were replaced. This time it's a different noise that only shows up with compression and some load in the car, and there is no external sign of anything.

I'm kinda not sure what to do, because the things are like $1k from Toyota and I don't want to drop that kinda money annually when the stupid things fail.

Great Info.

Thank You for posting what you found out. I have had my 2020 pro in 3 times for this being told nothing is wrong. Which makes me laugh since I have over 20 years in the Dealer Service industry. I knew they were wrong. But being an odd cold only noise that goes away usually after driving awhile I let it go till I could figure it out better.

So I just realized I am having this exact problem on my 2019 TRD Pro. I heard it all last winter but it went away as the temperature came up in the spring. Now I have been hearing it again this winter. Unfortunately, I’m at 38,500 miles now. I assume Toyota won’t help me and I’m out of luck?

Any Bulletins on this situation ?

Are there any actions that Toyota is taking claim for ? Fox ? ... this is BS

i have a 2021 TRD Pro which displays the same "thump thump thump" noise (its a non-metallic sound more like an exhaust pipe bumping against the floorboard). Also, it involves two or three "thumps" in rapid succession as i ride over rough pavement at slow speeds. Any ideas?

Is there any updates on this issue? I have a 24' Pro with 800 miles and my shocks clunk at low speeds when cold. I brought it to my dealer and they found nothing wrong but did admit they have no clue what they are looking for because they don't see many Pro's come in for service. I can put my foot on my running board and rock the vehicle pretty easily and you can hear the clunk. Also, while sitting in the driver seat I can rock side to side and hear the clunking just from my body weight. I read that after the redesign of the coil perch in 2021 that this issue is gone but apparently not. Weirdly, complaints of the shocks on forums kind of disappear after time frame.
