TRD Pro or Off Road Prem with $1.5k diff?

I've purchased multiple Toyotas from the same dealer for almost 15 years and he's offered a loaded Off Road Premium for 39.5 with a TRD Pro for 41.

Only problem is the Premium is in the color that I like while the Pro isn't. Debating just getting a Pro as the resale will be much better in comparison down the road. I don't plan to mod and am indifferent towards a sunroof.

Question, do you guys think the ORP will be significantly less than a Pro 2-3 years down the road? I'm guessing the difference in trade will be easily $3-4k off. What would you do?

If your already looking and concerned about the trade in value for 2-3 years from now, I suggested getting a 1 year old used one that already took the initial hit of depreciation.

When I buy a car, it's the car i'm looking for with options/color, since I keep them for 10-12 years before I get rid of them.

Resale on these trucks is good anyway. If you're going to mod, don't get the Pro. Just my humble opinion.

Im thinking in a couple years, when a 6th gen model comes out, Pro prices will drop. Pro or not, at that time it will be the old model.

And why would someone buy a car and worry about resale? Buy the car , enjoy it, then worry about resale when the time comes to sell it.

What color is the Pro? The 6th Gen is three years away so I wouldn't worry about it lowering the value if you're a 2-3 year guy. The Pro will certainly have a better resale value and TRD OR's are a dime dozen these past few years, especially in my AO. That said, if the OR is in the color you like then I'd save your money and go that route knowing you'll likely dump it in a few years anyway.

The Pro is at an excellent price though and that would put you even further ahead in a couple of years. I paid $44K for mine and I considered that a decent deal sub MSRP.

Best of luck with your decision, it's hard to go wrong either way.

If you plan on keeping it stock, go pro. If you plan on doing mods like a suspension and other cosmetic updates... TRD ORP with out a second thought.

essentially a pro is a trail/ off road with the softex seats, better suspension, some cheap/ easy trim options, tires and a push start. If you take an Off Road premium, uprgade the suspension, bumper valances, tiers etc... you can get a way better looking and way better performing truck.

keep in mind, you can take a 4 runner to 300K miles. Most other trucks don't come close.

trd pro comes with a push start button now? Now thats awesome. I thought the off-road prem come with black softex seats too?

Push start is an easy aftermarket add on, that some dealers offer. ORPs come with bells and whistles that the pros don't come with. most folks don't due the math and would rather pay for a name rather then pay for quality.

Price it out, you upgrade a orp to better than a pro for less than a pro... easy.

Okay, that's not what you said in your original post. :/ And negative on the push start button, its not an easy aftermarket upgrade. For our vehicles, you would need to leave a key inside and break it off inside the ignition and put a cap over it. Pro comes with softex seats as well, not sure where you get your information at. Push Start only comes on a Limited not a Pro.

An OR Premium comes with a sunroof, that's literally the only improvement (to some, not to me) that comes on a ORP that doesn't come on a Pro (only prior to 2019 now). To get the same wheels and tires you must get the blackout package which usually pushes the sticker to within a $1000 or so of a Pro sticker, granted the ORP can usually be heavily discounted in comparison. On top of that you will spend anywhere from $550-1000 (depending on where you buy) to put the Pro grill, valances, and blacked out badges on the truck and you still won't have the better Bilstein suspension. Push button start is only available on a Limited, and I am pretty sure it is not a simple retrofit with factory parts.

I agree that a Pro is only worth it in the long run if you leave it mostly unmolested, but like most, I think it is a more aesthetically pleasing looking vehicle due to the grill alone and regardless of what anyone says, the Pro will always have better value retention, arguing otherwise is just silly. At the end of the day a buyer should purchase what makes them happy individually more so than basing it on what will have better resale. That said, a lot of people are 2-3 year buyers and they factor things like that into their purchasing decisions and that's ok.

We are 2-3 year buyers ourselves as we dump a lot of miles on our cars and we like to try new vehicles after we get bored, but the 4Runner is an outstanding long term vehicle and we just might keep our Pro as a third vehicle for the long haul.

Does the blackout package only consist of black TRD wheels and black badges? I was contemplating getting a TRD ORP without the blackout package - dealer said it was a $3000 upgrade but I couldn’t figure out how or why. Black badges are $120 and TRD wheels can be had for $750 shipped (in my personal experience). What else am I missing?

39.5 doesn't seem like much of a deal. I got my TRD OR for 35k.

The premium or Pro are only worth it if you need leather or a sunroof. I put TRD pro wheels, blackouts, Sliders, and 33" BFG takeoffs from a Rubicon and a Bilstein lift on mine for way less than the cost of a Pro. The dealer charge for things like wheels is twice what it costs to do it yourself.

Since you are only 1,500 off of the price of an ORP to get the Pro it might make sense if you like it. You could not upgrade the ORP to Pro for 1,500 if you consider suspension, wheels and tires, and the grill.

You said you are not modifying, and if that is the case, I would prefer the Pro suspension even though it doesn't have KDSS which I do prefer.

39,500 seems a pretty good deal on the ORP depending on options. I just looked at some in Denver and the sticker was 43,000 if you get KDSS and sunroof. I know they would come off on the price, but I doubt it would be more than 3,500 off.

In the current market I think it's safe to say that the Pro is going to be worth more down the road. I see some selling used for new retail price. When I got my ORP the Pro was not an option because I couldn't find one, and they were about 4,500 more in price (Dealers usually won't deal on one). I also wanted a lift and couldn't see paying for Pro suspension just to rip it out and replace it. And there was the KDSS consideration.

Just my opinion, Your mileage may vary.

I will tell you exactly where I get my info from... the bottom of a bottle of Jameson.

Yes the Pro comes with softex seats... I mistyped

Yes the push start is not a factory option, though some dealers do offer it like the ridiculously overpriced black out package.

If you don't feel comfortable doing a mod like that you can always pay some one to it for you and still come out ahead.

bottom line, the Pro is a TRD off road with softex seats, bilstein/ fox suspension, different wheels/ tires and some trim options. You are paying for the name and perhaps resale value.

You are still better off cash wise if you plan to mod your truck and have a better performing vehicle in the end.

I actually priced it out in another thread and upgrading an an Off Road Premium to a Pro equivalent or better can be done for around $2K... with adjustable suspension. I'll add a link if I can find it.

And now there is the TSO option that lowers the price of PZ323-35056 @ 371.97 to $145.00 https://trailstandardoffroad.com/product/tso-pro-5th-gen-4runner-cover/

OP doesn't intend to mod. With only a $1.5k difference I'd take the TRD Pro. By the time you upgrade tires and suspension you are already $1.5k into it. On the other hand if you must have a certain color or must have a sun roof then TRD OR is the only way to go.

Thank you guys for the quick and comprehensive replies!

I am a ~3y car guy as I put a ton of miles on these and happen to do quite a bit of light off-roading. Resale is a huge component for me as I have no intention to keep it past 3 years. Doing a cursory overview it looks like the Pros soundly beat the other variants in this respect as you all have noted.

Locally, all of the ORPs are MSRP 44-45 which include sunroof and blackout packages. It's almost impossible to find one without the expensive blackout package. The Pros on the other hand are around MSRP 46. I prefer white/ black and the only Pro he can get a hold of is the Blue which I'm lukewarm towards hence the dilemma. I'll hold out and see if he can source a black/white Pro soon or otherwise I will be just as happy with a ORP!

There are tons of buyers "add" so called Pro package on top of even SR5s, so that murks the waters. I have the ORP + KDSS 17'. It did hold a great resale value. I did check with two dealers while receiving service, they had no issue offering KBB value right away. All I did was to put AT tires. Even though it is not the best, you should go ahead and check KBB values for the models you are looking and put miles on it. It can be different a bit from one market to another. I even see an increase in value this month!

Main difference between two is having KDSS option or not, check if it something you would value. Rest are mainly cosmetic and add ons in TRD Pro.

You'd have to have rocks in your head to buy a car if you don't like the color despite the price. Sounds like you spend a ton of time driving. It should be something you dig. Shit man, if you can't get a better deal on the ORP and the Pro is only in color you don't like..get an SR5 for a great deal and be done with it.

1) If you're within $1500 and you haven't added a bunch of options to the ORP, then either you're getting screwed on the ORP price or you're getting a crazy good TRDPro price. Dealers can and usually do offer deeper discounts on the ORP and tend to keep the prices higher on the Pro, simply because of the name/perception and demand.

2) Having said 1) above, you SHOULD be able to negotiate an ORP with some upgrades ("heritage" grille etc) and have the disparity still be quite large (say $4k-$5k).

3) As others have stated, if you plan to mod anything significantly (i.e. suspension) then get the ORP at a deeper discount. If you're not going to touch it, then the Pro is acceptable.

4) All 4runners hold their value incredibly well (if not highly modified). As long as you negotiate a good deal and you take care of it, it will still have rock solid resale later.
