TRD Pro won't go!

As has been said many times in this thread already, the OP's problem, while annoying and possibly disconcerting is a very rare occurrence with the 4Runner. I'm sure they will get it worked out. It is always frustrating to try and chase down these types of problems.

I have a friend who is a Land Rover mechanic. He has an insane amount of job security and will never personally own a Land Rover. That's enough for me, haha.

You can rest assured you chose an incredibly rock solid, reliable vehicle.

Not every vehicle can roll off of the assembly line trouble free. (regardless of brand)

I sincerely hope (for selfish reasons) that you are right and OP's problem is an isolated incident. I also sincerely hope OP gets his problem permanently rectified ASAP.

Your mechanic friend is not totally wrong. Land Rovers do have problems, certainly more so than Toyotas. If Land Rover brand can address their reliability issues, they would have unprecedented success. Even as it is, they are currently selling every car they produce as fast as they can produce them.

The only reason I bought a 4Runner is for its durability and reliability. Otherwise I would have replaced my beloved LR4 with another one.

If an LR4 was available with Heavy Duty Package at a local dealer I would have most certainly purchased it instead.

I'd answer your question, but I am not sure what you are asking...

I owned an LR4 for 4 years and traded it in for a TRD Pro last week.
I am liking the TRD Pro so far.

I have the most problematic Land Rover that everybody *****es about, and it's a Discovery II. Your neighbor must have bad luck since the LR4 are some of the most reliable Discovery's made to date. The DI's are hands down the most reliable, followed by the LR4, then LR3, and finally the D2

Sorry he has an LR3, I think they are all nice looking myself. The reliability just isn't there as a whole yet. I came from multiple jeeps. I know about unreliability.

That's a DI in the picture not a D2. The headlights are completely different between the two, and they're not interchangeable either (unless you do a lot of cutting and fab work).

The main problem with LR's that a lot of people don't realize off the bat is that they do require a lot of maintenance. Stupid maintenance to top it off. 4runners are the same way, but not to the same extent as LR's. If LR wants you to change the water pump at 50000 miles you better do it; because at 50001 the water pump is going to start leaking.

I actually sold y old YJ for my current 4runner. That jeep was a money pit!

I think this is why your catching flack, I put 65k on a 95 YJ with not one issue, it was the reason I bought the next two Jeeps! One persons positive or negative experience doesn't speak to the brand, as much as folks criticize CR, they do aggregate data on reliability pretty well. Anyway...

You are correct about saying it's an 02 (which is a D2). The D2's were made from 98-04, and that still isn't a D2 that you have pictured. These are headlights from my 04 D2, and you can see the difference. The headlights in the picture of your 02 D2 where never produced except for in a D1.

Different kind of money pit. When you have custom 9" axles with hi-9's, and 44's things tend to break regularly. The only issues I had with the YJ was the frame rusting out, some shorts in the wire harness, and the internal slave going out (twice). Besides that it was a fun jeep, but it was lacking on room.

Not an expert but this reminds me of my 3rd gen Runner. It did something similar but only when it was humid outside. It might be some sensors or some wires that were not sealed properly.

Well take it to the dealer and ask to talk with the owner of the place face to face and tell him what you told us on the forum

I've spent more money fixing my 4runner than my Rover hands down

I'm at 123,000 miles of what could only be considered abuse and the only stock parts that have failed me are 2 front door checks ($75 each) and the auto-down detent on my driver's side window switch.

Ah yes. So I should have said the only reason other than not being able to fnd an LR4 with an HD package was 4Runner's famous reliability. I would repurchase an LR4, despite reliability issues, had one been available - its that much better ( as far as I am concerned).

But now I have a TRD Pro. And I fully intend to put it to use, enjoy what it can do and at the same time expect the legendary Toyota reliability that its famous for.

Definitely a nasty problem, since it is intermittent. Clearly that is a one off, and not common problem. I got rid of a 2005 Xterra, and one thing it did was cut out at altitude, over 10K or so. A PIA off-road but never could diagnose it. One off, intermittent problems are just plain tough.

I'm sure OP decided taking it to the dealer would be more productive than reading what a bunch of forum squirrels had to say. Including bickering over headlights.
