TRD Super Charger Question

Okay heres the deal, Im thinking of adding a super charger to my 2000 4runner with about 60K on it. So I ran the idea by my step dad, who use to be a mechanic and he claims that if i have gone 60K with no SC with the addition of an SC it will just mess everything up. Then I try and tell him that the 4runner motors are made to have the super charger added to them. So my question is whos right? or are we both wrong??

Well, I wouldn't say the motors are "made" for the superchargers, but I wouldn't say it would harm the motor either. I think its the other way around, the SC's are made for the Toyota motors.

Either way, if I had the $4k for one I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

There is a lot of information on the SC's in the Performance forum.

I am against forced induction on any engine...it will increase wear & tear, no matter what anyone says.

Hey Thai,
Do you own a 4Runner? How 'bout the brakes in the Benz 500?
Scarey.

Why is it scary, Bob?? MB has always been known to make excellent brakes on all their cars. Most tests of G500 have scored it near the top in braking of any SUV...it consistently gets below 125 ft from 60mph.

And Bob, what does this have to do with the thread at hand??

Don't give it a second thought, the 3.4 V6 will last a normal life with or without the TRD supercharger. There was extensive testing done on this combo and it showed no abnormal wear at all. Best performance money I ever spent, you will LOVE it.

As a former owner of a Supercharged 3rd gen, I can honestly say that the 3.4 was not designed for the supercharge. At least based on the SC kit that TRD sells......... You have to remember that these are aftermarket kits. They are not factory installed superchargers like those found on Mercedes or GM motors.. The good thing is that it doesn't harm you warrenty assuming you have any left. Anyways, the big problem with the TRD kit is that the stock fuel injectors are just too small to cope with the extra air going into the engine thus leaning out the air/fuel ratio to dangerous levels, somewhere over 1400 EGT which is very bad. Also you will get alot of engine ping around 2500 rpms even with premium fuel. Fortunately TRD sells the 7th injector kit as a solution, albeit really expensive one. The best way is to go with the URD fuel upgrade kit which is much better than the TRD kit and better priced. Finally, the automatic transmission is unable to handle the extra torque, particularly 2nd gear. The absolute minimum solution is to at least get a tranny cooler. But really you need to do a transmission valve body upgrade to tighten up the shift points. After all said and done, I opted to sell my SC to another member and have been perfectly happy with my "Stock" 4Runner.

The TRD superchager was specifically designed for the 3.4 only. I've had it on my PreRunner since new (which carried a 5 year 60K mile warranty) and it NEVER had any type of knock or ping (90K miles). I pulled the factory plugs at 50K mile and they were like new and perfect color. Also, I have never had any problem with the auto trans what so ever and I'm running 410 gears with 31" LT tires. I have only used premium full synthetic motor oil and trans fluid, from new. I can tell you from personal experience that the 3.4/ TRD supercharger combo has been absolutely bullet-proof for me. It still has the original belt on it!
