TRD Super Charger

I purchased my second 1999 4Runner last December, so I have almost had it one year without any problems or any replacement of parts, etc. It has about 115k on it presently.

This 4Runner was owned and maintained by a Toyota tech and well taken care of. He had a few add-on that I probably would not have purchased due to price but he was able to get a discount on all his parts and have them factory installed.

One of the mods he had done was the TRD Super Charger which is very expensive and probably one mod I would have not done.

The reason for this new post is that I am experiencing a problem and wanted to know if the super charger could be at fault. I have emailed the past owner to get his feedback but have not heard back at this time.

What is happening at full throttle is a hesitation or sputtering. Sometimes it will sputter or hesitate so much it feels like a jerking motion. I guess I could equate it to a set of bad wires arcing against a heat shield.....had this problem on American cars.

I did some searching on the internet and came up with the super charger causing all sorts of problems if not properly installed and other parts being replaced and/or modified. Is this more of a problem if it was on a Tacoma which sounds like the super charger is not compatible with that vehicle.

The mechanic that drove it around while he had it hooked up to his computer said the only thing that he saw was that it was running on the lean side and it could be a dirty MAF sensor.

Replace spark plugs, use premium fuel and verify that you have the stock pulley if its a smaller one you might want to add more fuel with the 7th injector kit which is pricey. I didn't buy it but I only use 93 octane with my 2.2 pulley and I get 11.5afr at wot boosting 8 lbs. Try checking the spark plugs first.
 
Mine sputters like that sometimes too, even with the 7th injector/93 octane fuel

I would like to know why....

Thanks sprchrgd_4x4runner for getting back to me and your suggestions. I do use premium fuel but not quite sure what you mean by adding the 7th injector kit. So should I be worried that the super charger could cause damage to the engine or is it OK with my 99 4Runner?

Thanks Dous....again not sure what the 7th injector is and what kind of labor or difficulty is involved with that mod?

Essentially one of the problems with the supercharger is that it can run lean (not enough fuel). Especially when people run smaller pulleys. One solution is to add a fuel injector, thus the ability to add more fuel when you step on the gas. Tends to take care of the running lean issue. Another way of dealing with a lean issue is to run a bigger pulley. Downside to that is that you are lowering your boost.

Another option is to sell it...

Google urd 7th injector it will answer your question.
 
I hope that some day I'll find someone close to me who does not like their supercharger and will want to trade my intake for their blower :hiding:

No one mentions possible boost leak? Possibly at the bypass valve?
That's the first thing I'd check.

Do you have a boost gauge? Do you have an air/fuel ration gauge?

No gauges at all and where would I look for the bypass valve?

Just don't think you're lookin hard enough, there's been a couple wrecked ones on this side of the state with sc for 900-1500, your own damn fault you live on the devil side of the state

Yeah. I really haven't looked at wrecks at all. I should.
