Treadwright tires update

Jesus ... any mention of retread tires and all the pussies come out. I've got 18k on mine, and I love them. They have small cracks on the sidewalls, but so do my roommate's 6 month old BFG AT's lol. I got mine for $700 shipped vs. $1200 for the Nitto's I was originally going to buy. Pretty big ****ing savings if you ask me.

These tires have taken me all the over the West coast. Thru sand, mud, rock, water, you name it .... they've seen it. No question about it, I'm definitely buying a second set when these are finished. Only an idiot would spend nearly twice the price for MT's lol.
 
its funny how people spend so much money on their rigs but become "thrifty" for a lack of a better term when it comes to the only thing that actually contacts the driving surface and keeps you in control of your vehicle. also it blows my mind that people are ok with cracks in the sidewall, chances are these are not superficial at all. if you actually did your research on retreads you would see that its a kind of legal grey area and most big rigs arent even allowed to run them any more for safety reasons.

not to mention the fact that the tire carcass is probably old of dirt. everyone that owns retread tires do me a favor and look at the date on the sidewall. USDOT and governing agencies for rubber compounds have stated that tires should not be used longer than 5 years(this is different depending on the country some say up to 10 years is ok but only in perfect ideal conditions). the fact of the matter is even if that tire carcass sat in someones garage for 5 years before Treadwright got a hold of it, its still been broken down chemically.

I ask everyone that has retreads do you run the cheapest remanufactured parts you can find? Do you have junk yard parts in your steering or brakes? why not? its the same as buying crappy old tires trying to save a buck. you are right, only an idiot would buy a quality product over some used crap.
 
while I still believe they shouldn't be used if you do a lot of highway driving, they're good tires to beat on if youre pretty hard on them.

The information about truck tires not being safe, etc has been proved false by the US government themselves.

Read the lengthy report they issued. Summary? Retreads are just as likely to delaminate as new tires. Neither one are better.

In either event, people are entitled to their thoughts. It is a green alternative to throwing out tires which is a nice benefit and spurred me on to giving them a try. For the price they aren't bad.


BTW, I have the Kedge grip and they aren't spectacular in the snow by any means. I should clarify that, in the snow they are good, on ice not good. I aired down to 28 PSI the last snow storm. I do not have reference to any other mud terrains on ice though. I'm fairly certerain it's typical that they are not good on ice as well.

My kedge grip isn't chunking or wearing abnormally. I do everything from highway, gravel, some mud, and lots of rocks while wheeling/camping, etc.

Basically, your argument won't hold water without statistics to back it up. Shall I link the tests proving retreads are equally as safe as new tires?

Shall I post links providing data how on how unsafe a tire carcass becomes after years of heat cycles? Ignorance is bliss but you'd have to be pretty ignorant to think a tire that's undergone thousands of heat cycles and has had its chemical compounds broken down over the years is as safe as a brand new tire.

Thats the point of a forum.. to share your experiences so others dont make the same mistake you do.

In this example, subject A bought a Used tire with some new rubber on the top of it and was surprised when it started coming apart. He did this with the intention of preventing subject B (us) from buying the same horrible tires. Well done Subject A!

Suddenly a wild subject C appears! Trying to compare apples to oranges. Saying his cheap used apples were as good as brand new oranges. Luckily, subject B is smart enough to know that new oranges are better than used apples and its worth it to pay for good new oranges to prevent likely tread separation on the highway that kills families and totals 4runners..
 
I found this thread to be helpful. I was considering getting treadwrights, but after reading I don't think they would be right for me since I do a lot of highway driving. I say if you can't afford brand new tires just get some on craigslist. There are usually really good deals

Used retreaded tires for a lifted suv like 4runners is asking for a trouble. If the price is high, use 235 75 16.

you can buy Brand new few months old 267 75 16 Yokohama Japanese tires for $130 a piece + shipping (tirerack.com).

We all have seen tire pieces scattered around the roads that came off from 18 wheelers. These are all retreaded. Also 18 wheelers don't use retreaded tires to the front because they know how dangerous that is.
 
You can keep your slanted article. Ill keep the actual threads I have seen from actual users of the tires that experience problems. Yes even a few high speed tread separations that resulted in a totaled vehicle.

I dont care if the tires were free, you couldnt even pay me to use those tires. Ill gladly pay the 1200 per set for good tires and peace of mind that my passengers and myself are safe.

Not the first time I posted that DOT summary. You've read it no doubt as a TW thread troll! =}

I had TW, they road like ****, so I got rid of them. I think the company is also a bunch of clowns. others may have different experiences.

The traction and balancing was just fine. Duratracs ride a lot better.
 
aired down to 28psi lol thats aired down? i ran my 316s at 6psi a few times... tires held up but there is no sidewall tread at all. if you compare it to a 35x12.5x15 there not much cheaper at all.

there just as safe as a old tire with tread on it
 
I'll through in my two cents.

Number one reason for tire tread separation (all the treads we see on the side of the highway) is improper air pressure.

If you run low pressure, tire life will decrease.

Plus, I had a chance to man handle DOUS's retreaded tires and they were heavy as sin. I sure it doesn't help with gas mileage.
