Ok, so I am coming down the steps at Big Bear and this shtuff happens to me. What next? Any advice. Should I hope this happens to me before July? Argh!!!!!!

If this happens, you can still turn the car etc, but won't have any power.. So on the trail you would stay in place (block all traffic), disconnect the battery, and let the ecu reset and then take the shortest / easiest path into town and from there to a dealer.

Sounds so far like it usually happens when starting to move from idle.

Also keep the theoretical chance in mind.. Yes we know it can (and has) happened, but to how many trucks out of how many? This is highly concentrated reporting here.

My truck has been fine so far after the "fix".

my truck is affected as well, and i called the dealership that i purchased from and was told i had to wait for a check engine light prior to them doing anything. sucks!! i'm still working on it, but this is why i got rid of my jeep, i was sick of issues and wanted a reliable vehicle that is capable of offroading. i would love to do what it takes to try and get a recall going...

btw @ okki, which dealership did you go to here in Indianapolis?

Butler Toyota on 96th and keystone.. Not the greatest dealer, but the least objectionable close to me.

Since this is a TSB, and not a recall, I they won't do it preemptively.. The dealer needs to mail the defective part back to Toyota, and and they don't get reimbursed for the work if the part isn't broken..

Also, just because your vin is in the range, and doesn't mean it will ever have an issue.. Just saying...

It's VERY important that when anyone has a problem or issue that they call Toyota's 800 number and register a complaint. That is one of the main ways they determine what needs a TSB and/or changed in the design.

So it's official the 5th gen is a piece of junk? I was in my buddies limited and the drive, fit and finish, power, and noise that comes from under the hood does anything but instill confidence in the driver.

Seriously that 4.0 is a joke of an engine compared to the 4.7 which I had in my 2006 LX. 3 5th gens completely dead and the head gasket issue with the 4.0 is laughable at Toyota.

I guarantee 4.7 4th gens outlive 4.0 5th gens.

Woah.... Before people start blowing the 5th gens out of the water let's get our head around this issue. Don't get me wrong it blows when you get stranded on the side of the road. But if I am reading the posts correctly all you have to do is disconnect battery reset ecu and then the truck runs fine. Take to dealership and have code run and get new throttle body? In the grand scheme of car problems this one is not monumental....am I wrong?

I like to always think about land rovers when I think of monumental failures.... Had two disco's and currently an lr3 I the driveway. All of them my girls car. While the Re pretty unstoppable off road they are truly unreliable and quirky to put it mildly.

Not to deflect on land rovers but again seems as though some are jumping to conclusions here.

Although i get stranded on the highway tonight driving home from work you might see a different post from me...lol!

Someone should create a new thread, and everyone post in a nice format, the year, model, list of engine mods, and description of the problem so it can be kept up in an organized fashion.

that is toooo funny!! i actually work at a very reputable collision shop and i would NEVER own a mercedes or bmw due to the overall quality vs price. i have come across several people with high end price tag cars that have way more problems than a 4 runner owner will encounter... ha ha... most luxury car owers have "a mechanic buddy" that is damn near a family member...

I follow this 5th Gen sub-forum daily and there have been 2 reported on here and couldn't find any reported on the FJ forum and the 5ths have been out 2 1/2 years.
