Truck stays in lower gear with cruise on... why?

When driving 70 without cruise on my 4runner is around 2300 rpm. If i engage cruise, it almost immediately downshifts and runs at 3500 rpm. I have tested this over and over again and it's not a fluke.

Is there a reason for this? can it be fixed? if so, how?

mine does the same thing! it's annoying as heck.. i think its cuz theres jus not enough power from our 3slow, but i've always wondered why.. but see for me i can cruise in overdrive at 50 but anything over 65 it downshifts and goes nuts. maybe cuz i have oversized tires.

My truck is still bone stock. does the same thing. Poor design? something wrong? Any fix for it?

I would love to use cruise control on the interstate without getting 11mpg at 3500rpm... :sobbing:

its the kickdown it will engage just like your going up a hill because the our trucks are not designed to maintain that high speed there is no fixing this exept for one thing.
Drive slower you get better gas mileage at 60 or 65 MPH

mine does the same thing when i click the od off nothing comes on my intrument panel. helppppppppppp plz
