Sounds like your latch is already in the latched position when you try to close it. Look at the latch itself and see what it looks like. It may need to be cleaned up
 
Mine did this the other day, latch wasn't in latched position... I sprayed some lube in the latch mechanism and she's working great again... nobody wants their junk in the truck falling out :biggrin2:
 
Be sure to check the rubber that coats the latch. It gets brittle with age and breaks off and jams the latch. I had to replace mine, I couldn't get all the rubber out of the jam.

Checked mine this morning and it shut just like normal, quite odd haha
 
I will check mine with a pull before setting off on a journey since it opened up while going down the road with a few bags of dog food in back when my latch decided it needed some lube... luckily no spilled bags.

Thats crappy, I ratchet strapped from the hatch strap to the hooks on the floor just incase that does happen
