Trying to indentify "clunk" when braking (videos)

When I apply my brakes, there is a kind of crappy "clunk" that makes it feel like something is sticking. Also, if I press and hold the brake, I can feel something "unload" and settle back into place when letting go of the pedal. I tried to take some videos from underneath the 4runner to see if I could pinpoint it. The last video makes me think it might be my transmission mount. Does anyone see anything out of the ordinary in these videos? I basically drove and then just kept pressing the brake repeatedly. I have already done the Tundra brake mod so the calipers, rotors, and pads are in tip-top shape.

I've had the same problem for a long time but mine only happens when I come to a stop. I'll apply the brake, roll up to a light, stop, ease off the break a tad, and clunk something settles down in the rear. I've lubed the crap out of my driveshalf and that always seems to help but not completely get rid of it. Some say it could be the slipyoke that needs lubing. I've had 2 guys at my local dealer who has 3rd gens say theirs does the same thing and there's nothing you can do about it but that it's okay and nothings wrong.
 
Hmm, and I thought this "clunk" was only happening to me. Never gave much thought about it. Thought it was related to suspension.
 
Sorry to drag this old thread up, but I am about 99% sure it is a bad trans mount. It can be seen moving quite a bit. I have had the same issue on both my 4 runners and both had sloppy trans mounts. Sometimes my Shifter actually moves when the clunk happens and everything settles.

Look into it and let me know what you find. I am replacing my trans mount soon and will report back if it fixes mine

will you also simultaneously replace any of the other (motor) mounts as well?
 
Considering you can buy both motor mounts and trans mount for under 100 bucks shipped from Rock Auto - seems like a no-brainer to replace them all.
 
That's a pretty dang cool way to diagnose what's going on under your truck! I'm going to have to give my mounts a good looking at, I've been having that clunk as well and checked out the rear brakes this weekend to see if maybe they weren't doing their job as well as they should be along with greasing the drive line/u-joints.

And Shadow, totally agree with your line in red in the sig!
 
Clunk at stops too

I have a 98 limited and 00 limited I just bought, both trucks do the same thing as you describe. Taken all the same steps you did but no difference yet. Do you also have vibration between 60-70mph? I'm going to replace motor mounts, trams mount, and rear U joint soon. Let us know if ya find a solution. Great vid :-)
 
Im having the same issue , I have replaced the Rear U-joint and tried greasing the crap out of the driveshafts.

Did the Tranny mount fix the issue??

Im not sure what to do ???


Any ideas where to look , this clunk is annoying.


I recently bought this car it has always had it. Did the rear axle seals and new brake shoes so thats not the issue:(

I i started in my post i have tried that and even taken it to the dealer and had it greased!

As i posted in another thread. Do most of you get that same clunk if you sit in the car with it in drive holding the brakes and get a friend to jump on the back bumper!?
 
Update:
 Ive been trying to solve for a month--this is what Ive come up with.
Worth Trying If even after you have lubed up the Drive shafts and partilarly the Slip yoke of the rear shaft. Ussually that is the culprit for this known bang.

Try: Taking out that Zerk fitting ( just on the rear slipe yoke) and go for a drive, even have someone jump on the back bumper or drive up and down off a curb or down a bumpy road.

IN this pic it is the one on the right hand side:) 7mm should be the size

You should notice a drastic improvement without the zerk attached:clap2:

FWIW, I had the same clunk, especially after hard stops. I recently replaced all brake pads and shoes. When I removed the rear drums, about 1/4 cup of brake dust came out. I cleaned things up really well and after the new shoes went in, no more clunk.

BTW, I have a 2001 SR5 2WD (so no zerks in the propeller shaft).
 
I have the same issue. I have a squashed tranny mount and never realized this may be the issue. Anyone replaced their tranny mount yet?
