trying to pre-assemble coilovers

Hey guys, heres the deal..

I Just got my new top plates in and Im trying to pre assemble the coilovers so we can just swap them in on Sat morning,

well, I feel like Im missing some bolts or nuts or something... specifically a one that would hold the top plate onto the shock

see the pics... there are the 3 nuts that hold the top plate to the car/control arm??

but no nuts to keep this thing together

any help??

Am I stupid, or am I missing something??

Ill go take a pic of what its supposed to look like on the car, see if Im missing anything, In the mean time, any advice??

Based on what I see here,

there is a nut that goes on the shock thread that keeps the top plate on...

I dont think I have one of those... should that have come with the toytec coilover kit? or my top plates??

yeah, the bags of nuts are for the 3 threaded studs on the top plate, once you put the strut assembly on the car, you tighten those 3 and the bottom shock bolt down...
 
Yes, there should be a nut to hold the top plate into the shock. It seems your Toytec kit didn't come with one, I would just run to the local hardware store with the shock body and find a nut that fits.

Well, ran up to Toytec and sure enough the kit doesnt come with the nut or the washer but Ric was kind enough to just give me two of em...

so, im at home now, have trying to assemble and the shock isnt long enough to get the nut on after I put the top plate on the strut assembly.. with the 4 ring washers and the coils, after the top plate its just out of reach, Do I need to extend the shock? or am I gonna need a coil compressor to put these together? I was told to put them together off the car you dont need a compressor

I already checked to make sure the adjustable ring is at the lowest possible point...

Good thing Im doing this now instead of on Sat morn...

Yes, you absolutely need the spring compressor.

Run by almost any auto parts store and you can rent one for free. They charge you a deposit for it, but then give you all your money back when your done. (no, I am not referring to purchase and return, but an actual rental program they have.)
 
The kit doesn't come with the nut or washer? Did Ric have a reason why that is? Is it just expected that you will reuse the existing one?
 
I used basically the same spring compressors Elton is showing. Be careful, sometimes they want to rotate and sh*t can get real ugly - real fast. You can rent them from any chain auto parts store. Make sure to get 2 sets, a set of these compressors is only 1 and you need 2 to compress the coil. Unfortunately I had to grind the lip of the tab a little to get them out of the spring after it was mounted.

yeah, and the ones I got look like the pic below, they are oem ones... what a mess, and it looks like Elton has a 2nd grommet...

I dont think that one is gonna work, you need ones that go on the outside because you got a shock in there. Thats why you need to get 2 of them.
 
yeah that's not the right spring compressor. you need the set with a pair of compressors that go outside the spring.

also, you'll need that top bushing, I'd hope your kit came with it.

nope... I need to get two more bushings...frickin a....

I got the nut and washers from Ric today at toytec for the top, but no bushing... and I got to find the other kind of coil spring compressor now... fun
 
Ok, heres the trick thats gonna save you a TON of time especially if you live in Colorado,

the tool you are looking for,

is not called a coil spring compressor,

its a strut spring compressor,

or if you go to Checker/Kragen its referred to as "Kit One"

and I think I found some bushings that might work, those that have these on, take a look and tell me if you think they will

If the bushings will work I will go ahead and start putting these bad boys together
