trying to pre-assemble coilovers

Before this started, I was going to suggest you just pay the $100 for top plates from toytec that includes assembly. Thats what I wish I would have done when I did my lift. Getting the struts assembled took the most time. I eventually paid a small shop $40 to do it. Since I didn't say anything.... Anyone thinking about a lift from toytec, pay the $100, save your sanity.

That is a coil spring compressor (to be used for the rear coils on your 4Runner)....you need a strut compressor.

I dont know if I'd say that...

now we know exactly what we need and anyone can save themselves time and money using the info on this thread

As far as the bushings go, I actually ordered the "correct" ones from Toyota last night, they will be in tomorrow morning, but I also wanted to see if the ones from Autozone/checker/generic brand would work too.

Ill do a summary when I get them all put together with everything you need.

Of course you can do the job for free using your old hardware (top plate, nut, washer and bushings from your own car) but its not necessary and for like 50$ I can buy the new top plates, nut/washer/bushings to finish the job.

the thing that I found that is weird is that every set of "shocks" that I talked to autozone/checker about, come with both sets of the hardware, not just the one, it also appears that Elton and LINY both had the hardware they needed to finish the job..

I get the whole using your own old top plate to save money, but who wants to use the same hardware? shouldnt that be a part of the kit? I dont know, but thanks again to Ric and all the great people over at Toytec, they definitely go the extra mile to help out.

I would have used my own hardware if I wasn't going to send the whole strut assembly to FoneRunner. Its advantageous for him, cuz then he has 2 sets of hardware to choose from.
relooking at my pics, I know they used my old top plate and hardware there, but the nut/washer and bushing look like they came with the procomp shocks that he wants. Also, of course, the coil spacers.

more to come, Im gonna check with Napa see if they have the "correct" bushings, they close at like 6 or 7p in my area, so they didnt get to be part of my search last night.
 
Whats nice about this thread is that it is so comprehensive. While there are lots of choices for shocks and coils, the rest is the same every time...and now there will be no more mystery for anyone who wants to do this job!

I agree. When I was doing my lift, I didn't see this a a problematic step in the process. This thread highlights that and what to do about it.

btw, is your name for DU Hockey?

My OME 90004 struts came with all the bushings/washers and nut needed for complete install.

I'm guessing your struts may have been purchased, opened, and returned (unused of course) missing the hardware, because I've never heard of a strut that didn't come with necessary hardware.

well, the kit comes just like this

... Ric and the guys at Toytec informed me that this kit is made to reuse all of ur old top plate and hardware.

I just thought it would be missing the top plate, I was wrong. So then I thought that the hardware would come with the top plate, wrong there too.

Yeah, it looks like any other shock kit you buy will have all the hardware necessary

and I definitely like the 700$ Toytec kit that has the custom top plate,

but ultimately, I also like having options. Ill let everyone know what part the bushings are tomorrow and try and get a print out of the washer and nut part numbers from Toyota also.

so I got the Toyota ones today...

in this pic, the 2 smaller sets I got from Autozone are in front, and the big ones in back are the

official toyota bushings, part 90948-01056

The Washer should be part # 90948-02161
and the Nut should be part # 94184-01241


but then, I noticed looking at the top plate and the Toyota bushing next to each other...

the bottom of the top plate has something that looks familiar,
next to it, the toyota bushing...

so, what it looks like is that the "top" bushing is actually already part of the "strut mount kit" i got,

Now I dont think I even needed the toyota bushings... that I should just put the washer and nut on top (no need for another bushing???)

I got to finish this tonight, so any and all help is appreciated, these things have to go on the 4runner tonight or Ill melt!
 
On my 04 there is a bushing on the top and bottom of the strut mount! I would say yours is set up the same!

then what do I do with this "lower" bushing thats already on the Shock???

Ok,

so heres the install order I think Ill use,

as long as there is a bushing on both sides, think Ill be ok.

I guess if I used the bushing from the bilstein shock and the one from the top plate kit, it should be fine, Ill just swing the one from the top plate kit to the top instead of two on the bottom...

this is the bushing that came with the top plate, Im gonna try it on top and use the one from the shock on the bottom...

compare this one to the earlier pic of the same, this bushing was underneath and also cause problems with the length, cuz basically there were two "lower" bushings and no top ones...
 
There definitely has to be a bushing on the top, I think your plan should work, run the bilstein bushing on the bottom and the top plate bushing on top.
 
that bushing should stay in the plate!! it has the collar on it so the strut shaft doesnt bang around in the top plate!!

should go like this

cool, if i did use the the top plate bushing, I would have turned the collar upside down so it was still inside, but no biggie

Im gonna use the OEM toyota bushing on top, its huge, but whatever...

Ill get up pics once Im done putting it together... have to get my son dinner and in bed first...
