TSB 0121-12 Driveshaft replacement impressions

I had the common 'clunk' noise while stopping and before acceleration and a fellow member (Ark_Swamp_Rider) brought to my attention that I could have it replaced under warranty. I am at 40k and got the confirm that it would be covered from Toyota. Obviously with time and more miles I will really see how this new driveshaft does but first impressions are a difference of night and day. Very smooth. Just wanted to share.

I am not sure what the changes are. Maybe someone else could fill us in?

I don't think it is necessarily a "newer" driveshaft. It the one that has been used on the Lexus GX at the same time the Runners where using their version. I think the Lexus one does NOT have zerks and is completely sealed vs the Runner's servicable shaft which has zerks. Dont know too much about it but that is what i do know.

I had mine done and it definitely fixed the issue.

Non servicable throw away drive shafts. What will they think of next...:jk:

I understood that the Lexu$ also got a TSB for it, before the 4Runner, so it probably uses this new type now, but not before. So now instead of a zap of grease, they change out the u-joint. Progress.

Actually the Lexus got a RECALL. Not a TSB. Sucks for us.

Had mine replaced. Dealer I bought my truck from tried to tell me that the TSB "doesn't fix the problem" and the driveshafts were identical and the new one just had some ceramic harmonic deadeners, or some shit like that... Told him to do it or I'd report him to the State for breach of contract on my purchase warranty....

The new driveshaft is lightyears ahead of the old one. 10k miles on it and not a single clunk since it was replaced. This should be a recall for us as well.

Sounds like some space shuttle stuff. So after more than 30years they found a solution. The more things change the more they stay the same. I have an 84, and a 2003 that clunk, and both have faulty lowering tailgate windows....hahaha

Look on the bright side, this is a relatively cheap fix that cures an unbelievably annoying problem.

It is annoying, that's true. Feels like you're going forward but your rear end stayed behind. Now you should update your footer, after running board delete, you should add clunk delete.

Before anyone spends the cash to repair their driveshafts I read that you have to over grease them. 30-50 bumps in fact until you see the yoke move out and see grease spew out. I guess years and years of under greasing and not greasing at all causes the clunk. So you have to over grease this thing to wake it up to properly work.

I don't have a clunk in mine. But my neighbors 07 v8 does. Next time I change his oil I'm going to over grease it as its very annoying to drive his car. Wanted to get back in my V6 badly after driving his V8.

Hey Chmura , I was just reading all the ol posts about this & found this part no. drive shaft 377110-60a40 lexus part is 60a80 I might be wrong is this the Toy. part or Lexus ? Now when I looked at Carson Toy. to see how much it showed 273$ & I'm paraphrasing here could be more or less , do you know if this is the whole shaft or what ? Maybe Blackworksinc can let us know ? Cause I'm definitely out of warranty !!

Ok went & checked hate getting old , a80 is a lexus prop shaft assy which is 433$ a40 is toy. 257$ calls it propeller shaft ?

I learned to live with the clunk by now and I expect it now. The occasional times when it doesn't happen, it is surprising to me. It blows my mind that there is no recall on this since it seems that every 4th gen has/had/will have it. Especially since they recognize it as an issue in the first place by putting out a TSB. My '06 has it worse than my '03 had it. But it certainly doesn't bother me enough to pay to have the Lexus part installed, at least not yet.

I don't worry about the clunk since it's not any kind of wear or durability issue.

Clunk discussion is all over the 3rd gen section here and I've run into plenty of discussion about it at ih8mud about Land Cruisers.

If some people are getting it fixed, that's great, but for others it should be kept in mind that's it's not any kind of durability or wear issue.

I'd still like to know what the difference is in the new drive shaft, though. It seems logical it would start to show up in brand new 4Runners and if it's a sealed unit it shouldn't be hard to identify.

Hell probably jinx myself but luckily I have no known issues with drivline clunk grease it myself , no HG probs ,fixed leaky cv boots , this me knocking on wood , all I'm doing is gathering parts no. in a END O THE WORLD SCENARIO !! Tried to not mess with to much electrical cause don't trust myself & hopefully it'll last me until the kid gets it . Just like to have info for future reference .

I eliminated my clunk with "over" greasing the slide fitting at the rear end of the axle. Not a clunk since. Now I just hit all the zerks in the drive assembly with a couple pumps when I change oil.

Not sure I would give up my maintainable drive shaft for something throw-away that may not last as long.

i have the updated driveshaft on my 4runner, just had it done a few weeks ago. the shaft is serviceable, the u-joints are not. i posted my findings in an earlier post.
