TSB for the 05's

Well, I took my 4Runner in for the 15,000 mile checkup and inspection on Thursday. I had mentioned to Toyota about the TSB on the catalytic converter and then handed the bulletin to the service manager. Talk about a run around, this guy was asking me a million questions.

Do you have the smell? When did you notice it? Are you sure that's what you smelling? Where did you find this TSB? I mean, they really try and make you feel like your a huge inconvenience to them. After a little while he finally said they would install it. Well, it turned out that they have to order the part anyway so it won't be there until the end of next week :bash:. If I ever get this thing installed I'll let you guys know if it even makes a difference. Just wanted to give you all an undate on the latest and greatest sulfur run-around.

So it isn't my imagination. Guess here comes another trip to the stealership. I am begining to feel like I am on par with my Ford as often as I take this NEW truck back to the stealership.
 
I've noticed this smell as well, but I wasn't sure if it was the car or not since i haven't noticed it all the time. I was also thinking that it may have been some of the undercoat burning off the engine (noticed that they got some overspray on the exhaust) since the car is brand new.

Where can I find a copy of this TSB?
 
Texas do a search on the message board. There are 3 different TSBs out for this issue. There is one for the 2003-2004 V6, 2003-2004V8 and the newest 2005V6. I haven't heard of one for the 2005 V8 yet, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.
 
So does anyone know if there is a TSB for the 2005 V8s? I havent noticed the smell with mine, but was just wondering.
 
It's warm today and will also be this weekend in the Northeast so, I rolled down the back windows and took the highway. Whoah!!! Boy did I forget and was reminded quickly about the sulfur smell on my 05 v8.:headslap: I too would like some info on the TSB for a 05 v8. Since i had a 03 v6, I had the TSB performed already. I think I am heading back to the same service dealership and explain this is a newer truck which needs the same TSB performed.

Jack Taylor Toyota is going to do the TSB for me. For cripe's sake.

Long awaited.

BTW, all I have received was run around with Lustine Toyota in Woodbridge. I regret purchasing it from them.

Wow that's wierd. I didn't get any gruff from them when I got mine done back in 04. I talked to Chris the service manager personally and he actually mentioned that there was a TSB for the sulfur smell without me showing him the printed copy I had in the glove box.
 
I didn't speak to a manager, however, I called and with tact and diplomacy, I explained who I am and who problem I am having and that I would like to have my vehicle repaired under the TSB.

and this jackhole said (and I will quote), "So, many toyota owners are experiencing problems, its bad gas."

We went into dialogue where I said, "unless you are extremely foreign to a toyota service center, you are aware that the 2003,4, & 5 4runners have a problem with excessive sulfer smell."

He said that a mechanic will have to test drive the vehicle under "load conditions" and then the exhaust will be checked via machine. WTF. The TSB says "customer complaint."

Do you have the parts to repair the vehicle... I'm not sure.
What can I do to minimize the wait time... bring it in and we will check if you have the problem and then order the parts.

I called Jack Taylors and I explained who I was and what problem I am experiencing. The guy interrupted me and said... Sulfer Dioxide. He asked me to bring the vehicle in, stay inside the vehicle, with the vehicle in neutral rev the engine once to 3k and I'm done. The parts will be on order and I can come back when the arrive at the shop.

DONE. No BS, no test driving my vehicle, no wait. No BS story about gas - just identify the problem, order the parts.
 
UPDATE, just received a call from Jack Taylor's and the srvc mgr said, do not come in tommorrow. I will quote them, "We have been authorized to order the parts based upon your complaint."

He asked me to have my vehicle there first thing Friday morning, they will drive me to the airport and pick me up! How is that for business!

No hemming and hawing around. I know I have a problem. Toyota knows my VIN has a problem... WTF...

Awesome! I will have to check my VIN and see if I am in the effected range.
 
I took mine in today finally. The stealership is gonna order a full exhaust set-up, to include full cat back, plus all sensor wires. Sounds like a bit overboard, but hopefully it'll be fixed.
 
What parts are being replaced?

I had a "cat back" replacement done on mine and I still have the smell. It's not as severe, but still there....

It only bugs me when I have the windows down, but I notice everyone hangs back when I accelerate up the on ramps!!:D

So, those of you with V8's who have had this done, please post up with the results. I have the problem and want it fixed, if in fact this does fix it.
 
I had the 'fix' done, but the smell is still there. It's not quite as bad as it was before, but still bad enough so that I don't roll the back window down (which sucks, becuase I was really excited about that feature on the 4Runners). I'm considering getting a new exhaust put on with a pipe that comes out the side. That should fix the issue of the smoke coming into the cab, but I'm sure that it will still smell bad.

That does suk; though, it seems to be what most who have had this done are experiencing. I'm trying to decide if it is worth being without my vehicle and trusting the dealership to not f/u my 4runner. If it eliminated it, it might be......
 
My question is: Does having an aftermarket catback system (Borla, Magnaflow, TRD, etc) installed help in anyway with this issue?

How about if an aftermarket catback system is installed with the exhaust pipe curved to the side?

It appears to me that the Toyota corporation can NOT effectively totally reapir this sulfur smell issue "without" hampering thier LEV standards. I truly believe this is the real problem with toyota's large engines as they can't afford to lose the LEV standards in states like CA,NY, and others in the northeast.
