Tuesday drive in the woods (pics)

With blood pressure off the charts, being fed up with work BS and being reachable 24x7x365, I had to get out of town yesterday. So I went in search of mud, trees, wildlife, and NO people.

Had a great time. Mud was deep, sticky, and slick but I didn't care.

Sorry for the lame :gay: pics but these were the best I could do by myself and without sinking hip deep in mud.

Taking a "I just drove 3 hours" break.

Yup, 20 degree hill. No biggie other than the hernia getting in and out. Try it some time. :D Also shows you how I mounted my clinometer a little better. Strawberry Fanta not required. :cool: "Dust" is a requirement.

This hill is VERY deceiving. Pics always minimize impact. Just below the top of this hill it's about 35 degrees. It was also wet muddy clay with a few bowling ball sized rocks to dodge. Not hard on dry surface but at 35 degrees on mud, it's . . . not easy.

I "almost" made it. I'm about 20 ft short. Took 15 seconds to get here and 20 minutes to back down. Backing down is a lot more dangerous than climbing. Less traction and a lot less steering. Sure you can do it quickly, but you won't drive it home.

Here's my one year old muddy RevTek lift. This is what happens when you drive through deep thick muddy clay and then up onto shale gravel. Instant retread. :D

I like the soda bottle in that one pic. If you had placed marks on the bottle at 10, 20, & 30 degrees and then send it me, then I could use the soda bottle as a cheap incline-o-meter.

O BTW nice pics!

You could hang a plumb bob from the mirror. When it's poking you in the nose you'd know it was steep and off camber. :cool:

Federal Contractor here feeling your pain man. Too bad I only have urban jungle around me...
 
That one hill did look like a doozy! I have run things like that, mostly power line access roads: they look ok untill all you see is hood and sky!

How did your BFG's do in greasy clay? I am getting myself a set of the same soon, but have been apprehensive about mud.

i have been threatening to do the same thing...I just have not been able to tear away yet myself:(

J/K. :D Your pics are always great, and I can't wait till spring to take some time off so I can take that trip out west. All I can do for now is just stare at the pics you post, and read that book you recommended. Has that revtek sagged any? Anyways, once again, great pics!
 
Thanks guys. Bobby and sharp4runr, I drove 3 hrs one way to get here. It was well worth it to me just to get out. I left at 4:30am and was home by 6pm.

Like all AT tires, they're better than OEM street tires but not as good as MT's. The BFG's do load up with mud but one good press on the gas and they unload real quick.:D I did Sedona, AZ red clay mud in my "brand new" (read full tread) Dunlop AT20's and the BFG's are better. No AT is going to be wonderful in mud. I rarely get into mud, about 10% of my off road time.

OK, no more pics. Yeah, right. :D Lift still measures the same as it did when new after a week of settling. It went up when I added the bigger BFG's. Can't wait to see your trip report from CO.

These are my second set of BFG's. I had them on my 3rd GEN 4Runner. I love them. They do exactly what I want them to do and for what I bought the rig to do.
 
I love your 4runner. I've been researching lifts and just today decided to go with a Revtek kit. I'm still undecided on tires. I really like the looks of the AT KOs but the Revos are a bit cheaper. I'm just wondering how durable the Revos are when off-roading.

In the end, I'll probably end up with the same setup as you. I'll probably wait until it gets warmer to do the upgrades. I still have a few things lying around that I need to install but I'm a wimp when it comes to working in freezing weather. Last night it was about 38deg F so I decided to put air in my tires. I've been driving around with the TPS light on for a while. I even got the spare! :D

I've been through Sulphur and Bartlesville area many times. I especially enjoyed the Remington museum in 'Wollerock', check the spelling.

That is a GREAT part of the country to have as a backyard. The Ozark foothills are KA!

You ever see the Boggy Creek boogey man? It lives, supposedly, in that area of SE OK. :D
