Tundra Brake (199mm vs 231mm)

It is time for a brake job and I am set on going with the Tundra brake upgrade. I am going to use napa premiums and make sure I get ceramic pads as I want this brake job to last.

I had read somewhere that it is better to do the 199mm over the 231mm upgrade if you live somewhere where it rains and snows a lot. This is in fact the case where I live so I wanted to check on here why people went with the 199mm over the 231mm?

I do not have an issue with trimming my dust shields I really just want to know why people go with the 199mm upgrade? I do have the 02' 5 star rims for the 199mm should fit without trimming if I decide to go that route.

Please give your OP on the 199mm vs. 231mm upgrade.

I have run both the 199mm and the 231mm.

I went with the 199mm initially because it was cheap. A friend of mine sold me the whole setup for like $80 IIRC. When all I had was a lift and 285/70R17 tires the 199mm setup stopped me well enough, but I still had issues with warping. Once I started adding bumpers, skids, etc. they simply were not enough. On STEEP declines I would sometimes have trouble coming to a stop by the time I was at stop sign, light, etc.

So now I have the 231mm brakes and I still feel like they suck. They're a LOT better at stopping my barge of a 4Runner, but sometimes I still feel a slight thought of, "huh, wonder if I am going to actually stop before the intersection."

I have Autozone calipers, OEM rotors, and OEM pads.

My 199s were OEM calipers, rotors, and pads. I had a caliper freeze up (multiple times) and swapped to Autozone calipers, OEM rotors, OEM pads.

As for ABS... I still have mine hooked up, but it has been malfunctioning for the past year or so. I've never had it help me before...

The ABS on my wife's car is incredible. I did a "brake check" in the snow the other night and got one big CLUNK and then it stopped on a dime. I wish my ABS did that. Instead it just kills my brake pedal and keeps on a rollin'.

I agree that the ABS on these trucks need help, and I know exactly what you mean about it killing the pedal. Happened to me on the way home today in a snowstorm, went to slow down to make a left turn and the ABS kicks on for about a second, then eventually you just slide as if you had no ABS.

I don't tow regularly, and I don't plan on doing anything crazy to this truck other than lifting it and throwing 265/75s on it (maybe 285s in the future if I have this truck for a long time), so I imagine the 199s would do well enough for me.

My issue comes from, if I'm going to do it, do it right the first time....which is where the 231s come in. However, I don't want to go for the 231s if they're going to give me braking issues.

I'm new to the 4Runner experience and can honestly say my 2000 SR5 v6 4x4 is a keeper, for another 15 good years.
- love everything about it, except the stock brakes
- which seem to be soft, at very low speed / I live in a snow belt, in winter & will keep the ABS fuse operational
- SUV had new UAP-NAPA premium brake components, 3,000 miles ago (for plate certification)

For starters, a very basic question:
- lots of talk here / 199mm vs 231mm
So what is the stock size of our rotors, in mm ?
- just for a reference standpoint

Will stock Gen3 calipers, work on the 199mm rotors ?
I assume 231mm rotors, need Tundra calipers ?

I have plans to upgrade my tires to LT265/75R16" (E Load) on stock rims or OEM Gen5 17" alloys (for summer).
Not interested in a lift, our Govn. safety checks are brutal.
- future plans to pull a 20 ft. tandem axle travel trailer

I'm leaning to this type of brake kit / EBC brand, but in 199mm.

infamousRNR and I just did a Tundra Brake Upgrade for Jayjayb96. Here's the video for those that are interested in a step by step tutorial of the mod:

This is the main issue I had after TBU. I have had them engage just hitting a very small bump. It can be very dangerous if you dont know how to react.

I'm surprised theres no fix/mod for this yet. Someway of dialing back/fine tuning how much the ABS intervenes. I've had one incident already running into the back of someone and I know if I didn't have ABS I would have stopped in time.

Pulling the fuse and running without it is just masking the problem, because I've driven many SUV's that stop on a dime with the use of abs and it can work wonders when working 100%! Where's all the engineers at?

In the end I went with 2002 4Runner OEM rotors and NAPA ultra premium pads. Obviously a night and day difference from the "warped" rotors I had on. It has been about 5000 miles so I cannot give an update if it was worth just sticking with OEM rotors but I will chime back in around 15k miles. I have "warped" a set that fast before more than once. Those were just cheap autozone or like store ones. Hopefully I get a couple years out of these with no headaches.

No TBU eh? :( What a shame

Damn! I just found this when a buddy and I have been setting up to do the 231 upgrade this weekend. All the parts have arrived and all the prep work done...$hit....I have owned plenty of cars without ABS...but my wife drives this thing a ton and I don't think I can risk it.

Tires and ABS

I see that the few posts from someone who have actually had this happen to them have some bigger tires that aren't possible without a lift or cutting. I have heard that tire size and lifts will mess with the ABS, but rotor size should not unless there's specific ABS systems (i.e. ABS ring) that are adjusted with the conversion. Has anyone who has tires bigger then 265/75/16 with or without a lift ever had issues with the ABS that don't have the tundra brakes?

Pulled the trigger last Friday and did the 231 upgrade. After 1st bedding process still have some sponge. Going to do a second round.

Worried now as we got some icey snow today and my wife said she ran two lights because she couldn't stop in time...abs was going off.

I told her to leave a lot of extra space until I can drive it and see if it is functioning like it should or if I am going to be swapping out to 199's.

my old 97

I had done the 199 upgrade on my old 4runner. i remember it being WAYYYY better than stock. it has been 8 years since i did it though.. plan on doing it to the new 4runner as well. these were NAPA calipers and ebay rotors. unsure about pads. probably ebay pads that came with the rotors.

Sounds like they need to be bled not bedded.

Spongy was the wrong word. The pedal travel is significantly further than previous, but once the brakes grab they work well. The TBU post I followed made this sound normal from the amount of people experiencing it. It discussed doing the bedding process twice and it goes away.

No air bubbles after installation. I suppose I could bleed them again now that it has some use, but the pedal doesn't compress like I would expect with air in the lines.

I drove it last night. The ABS does kick on when on ice, but I would expect that. I think it functioned as it should, ABS kicked on but still came to a stop. I think, as this is a newer vehicle to us, and the pedal changed with the TBU install, my wife just isn't used to it yet and her description of running the lights were 1. going downhill on ice and 2. applying the brakes firmly on ice when the light turned yellow suddenly. I'd still like to get the extra pedal throw before the brakes engage out of the system, so once things clear up here I will bed the brakes again.

Yea, they definitely grab harder & take time getting used to with a lighter touch.

13WE Pad #?

I am looking to put the 199's on my other T4R to compare to 231's, but am struggling to find the OEM pad #'s for the 13WE caliper. I will get the Powerstop 13WE's from Rockauto, and know that the rotor is the same as the WL's, but does anyone have the OEM pad # for the WE's? Does Toyota still make them or was did they do a clean switch going to the WL's?

Pads for 199mm caliper= 0446-0C012

Get the shim kit too = 04945-04012

Ha. My phone dinged with your notice as soon as I found these on Amazon. I am seeing part number 04465-0C012 for brake pads which I assume is just a typo on missing the 5 from your post.

Thank you for replying.
