Tundra brake upgrade

If I wanted to upgrade my 1999 4runner 4x4 with the "Tundra brake upgrade", what are the part numbers for the parts? What would I tell Napa, or the auto parts store that I needed? What all will I need? Is there a lot of trimming that has to be done on my rims?
I really want to do the 231mm upgrade. Or is the 199mm upgrade just as good with less hassle? I have the vibration in the front end when braking hard.
Any advice or tips would be very much appreciated.
Oh, and about how long will it take to change them out? Is it an all day task?

Check out the link in my signature below about the 231mm brakes. In that thread is a link to a couple other threads with loads of information. I also got my calipers from Napa and just asked for calipers from a 2001 Tundra, part number 13WL (I believe that's correct; it's been awhile). It's really as easy as that.

The 231mm's should easily fit under any 17 inch rims, and the 199mm will fit under the stock 16 inch rims. I love the 231mm's especially when I'm towing a trailer, but if you're not planning on towing our hauling a heavy load then the 199's would probably be fine.

With the 5 spoke wheels on the highlander I would go with the 231 mm calipers because they will fit perfectly. You just have to trim the dust shield. I have those wheels no problem.

a summary of sorts..

if you have the OE 6 spoke wheels you need to get the 199mm calipers (WG). If you have the OE 5 spoke wheels you can run either the WG or WL (213mm) calipers. If you try the 213mm calipers on a the 6 spoke OE wheels you will have to grind away at the back side of the wheels to accept the larger 213mm caliper.

In both cases the rotors are the same. I went into kragen and asked for a quote for calipers, rotors and pads for a 2006 (after the Tundra TSB) tundra.

From what ive read the 199mm calipers and rotors are bolt on but that the 213mm calipers require some grinding of splash guard for the caliper to fit.

once installed the only thing you need to do is bleed the brake. Here are some write ups from the tutorial-docs section here

When I did the Tundra brakes I got them from an 06 Tundra with 13WL caliper.

Sorry to dig up an old thread.

I know the comment of any 17 inch rim will work was posted I just want to make double sure before I lay down the cash on the parts.

Anyone have experience with these newer Tacoma rims and if they work.

It will work but from previous experience the 4Runner operates better when you flip it around. #howubdrivinondaceiling

I run the 231mm wl calipers from amazon. Its was 275 for the whole shebang. Use pb blaster on brake line fittings, a flare wrench for brske lines, vicegrip the rubber brake hose, be prepared with a cutoff wheel for the dust shields. I ordered spacers 1.25 inch but may grind my stock rims later.

That series of posts I did was a disaster.

So I guess I am trying to figure out is it just a direct bolt on with those rims. I am really trying to avoid using spacers as well.

Also I found a few junk yards in my area with the calipers is that penny wise and pound foolish?

Used calipers really is leaving yourself open to problems. Stuck cylinders, leaks, who knows might go wrong. This is how you stop your vehicle and could be the difference between life and death, I know I'd never put a used caliper from a junked car on any of my vehicle for that reason.

If you are looking to same some money though, check out the reman'd calipers on Rockauto.com. They are original housing but all moving pieces have been replaced with new parts.

was just hoping for someone who had done the upgrade with my exact setup of 4x4 gen 3 and those tacoma wheels to just say wether it fits without spacers or not.

I've poured through the posts on this forum and others and though many oe and after market wheels are mentioned I have yet to find someone greenlight this set up.

Sorry if the question is a little specific I just figured with a sample size this big I would find what I was looking for.

Either way it sounds like you need brakes. The tundra upgrade is worth it no matter what. If you find you need a small trim spacer or something larger you really not going to upgrade or go 199mm?

Buy the upgrade. Install. Worst case scenario you need a small few mm spacer or a set of spidertrax. You could always do a little grinding to rim of need be.

That being said. There is absolutely no reason they should not fit under any Toyota 17". There will be over an inch of clearance. I'm 90% positive they will fit.

Pretty basic question but I figured it would be better to ask. Will the Sequoia brakes fit the same as the Tundra ones? I have way better luck finding Sequoia's in the local pull it yourself parts places than the Tundras.
