Tundra Coil - 4Runner top cap Fitment

Theres a ~20mm~ difference in diameter between the tundra and 4runner coil so as a result the tundra coil rests ~10mm~ (on each side) outside the bolt circle of the 4runner top cap resting near or at the outer edge of the 4runner top cap.

My problem is that i just paid $60 in labor for someone to tell me this and then refuse to compete the job b/c the the top cap-coil fitment is supposed to be so that the coil rests right under the top cap bolt circle and that they wouldnt complete the job b/c the tundra coil would rest along the outer edge of the top cap and not under the bolt circle. And they didnt know if this was safe or not b/c theres no evidence that its safe in the long term.

So is this an issue of which after reading thread after thread and BELIEVING what i read? Is there ANY proof out there that the tundra coil-4runner top cap fitment ISNT an issue in the long term? Am i going to run into this everyplace i go? so i have to do it myself? Anyone wanna help me do it?

Where did you get them done? Ask them too look up the Sonoran Steel 1.2 kit and that is all the proof you need. You shouldn't have had to pay since they didn't complete the job. That is crap. Take it to a different shop, preferrably not a chain. I got mine done at Sears the first time and they had no problem.

Thanks for the response. I went and looked at the description of the SS 1.2 lift and caught this item " (2)-Sonoran Steel Fabrication L.L.C. Custom Polyurethane Top Plate Retainers".

Sounds like SS noticed the same difference in coil diameter and its fitment into the 4runner top cap and fabricated something so that they could safely (legally) sell the 1.2 lift.

I dont know what my other options are right now.

Wheelersoffroad.com used to have the rubber caps aftermarket after running out of OEM stash but I don't see it now.

Rockauto has them - MONROE Part # 907926 - $7 a piece at Rockauto. There's also a 5% off coupon if you google. Called a coil spring insulator.

I really don't think you need any extra part. Tons of people have used the stock Tundra and 4runner parts with success. I'm glad they are refunding you.

I have the wheeler tundra isolators

but they dont increase the diameter of the upper strut mount so the coil isnt sitting out the outside edge of the 4runner upper strut mount.

Guy at the local off road warehouse store mentioned that all pro off road makes a modified upper strut mount like the one i described above for tacoma owners wanting to use tundra coils.

I'm running the 4Runner Top Hat's with the Tundra Rubber Isolators and have had NO problems. I've been running this setup for over a year, and have over 8 000 miles on them now.

I'm also using the 4Runner top hat and Tundra insulator - no issues once so ever. As you can see, the coil sits a little outside the edge of the metal top hat, but definitely not enough to make it pop off or collapse.

After seeing what my options are at his point i think im going to buy a 2nd set of 4runner top plates, have a shop swap out the top plates on the assembled tundra/bilstein strut and then complete the job with the help of a neighbor.

If anyone has a extra set of 4runner top plate ill take um off your hands.

I'm wondering if anyone has done this with the 4runner isolators. When I called wheelers they told me it would work; now I'm second guessing their advice.

I had 4runner isolators on at first and it worked fine. The Tundra isolators cover more, but I'm not sure if it makes that big of a difference.

took the assembled struts, 4runner top plates and tundra isolators to recommended shop in town last night to have the top plates and isolators swapped out.

I told um what i wanted done, and the guy said let us pull it apart and if we dont think it will work we'll call you other wise if we can complete the job you can pick im up this afternoon. I guess we shall see ...:beer:

Question...What if you cut the studs down flush on a tundra top plate, and then drilled the top tundra top plate for the 4runner top plate bolt pattern and then installed studs?

Can someone PLEASE clarify if the isolator being referred to is the rubber piece that goes between the coil and the metal top plate or if isolator is referring to the metal top plate that the studs come out of? I have read several threads regarding the Tundra springs but can't seem to grasp what specifically is being referred to. I assume it's the rubber piece so to clarify for me, the people that are swapping these 2 parts with Tundra springs are using a Tundra isolator (rubber piece) on top of the coil and a Tundra Top plate (metal thing with bolts coming out of the top the bolts to the vehicle. But either way, these parts are more or less interchangeable function wise. Is this correct?

The diameter of the Tundra bolt pattern is larger than the 4Runner. The Tundra studs will not line up with the 4Runner's holes for them. This is why you use the 4Runner top plate.

Don't get hung up on the terminology.
