Tundra owners what are your thoughts/issues

What am I missing here?

For the 2009 4th Gen:
The 1GR (4.0 V6) made 236@5200 hp and 266@4000 lb-ft
The 2UZ (4.7 V8) made 260@5600 hp and 306@3400 lb-ft

For a 2013 5th Gen:
The 1GR (4.0 V6) makes 270@5600 hp and 278@4400 lb-ft
The 1UR (4.6 V8) makes 310@5600 hp and 327@3400 lb-ft (used in Tundra/Seq.)

The V8 makes ~15% more power/torque than the V6.

You've answered your own question:

4th Gen 4.7 V8 - 260hp
5th Gen 4.0 V6 - 270hp

Hence, Toyota made a concious decision in saying that the 4.0 (5th Gen) makes more hp than a 4.7 (4th gen,) and decided to replace the outgoing V8 with a V6 that makes more power. Also keep in mind that the 4.0 is physically smaller and lighter - another advantage.

Does it make sense? Maybe, if you're a bean counter or if you're trying not to destroy your CAFE numbers. Their logic was along the lines of "if 4Runners were selling with 260Hp, people are going to be STOKED if we give them 270Hp!!"

I have both a 4runner and Tundra. At the end of 08 I bought a Tundra Crewmax TRD OFF Road. I use it for camping and home depot runs.

Its 4 yrs old now and has served me well. In 2010 i gave my wife the choice of the Tundra or her 08 Sequoia. Same truck really however she chose the Tundra as the keeper...i was surprised.

She loves it and threatens my manhood if i sell it on her. She loves the power, ride and dog hauling capabilities. I put a shell on it when i sold her sequoia.

Yeah, its plasticky, however so it my Limited t4r. Its a toyota thing...spartan and hard plastic. I sold my bmw 5series for my t4r so yeah, luxury was a major downgrade.

I guess Toyota wants to give you a reason to buy a lexus...dunno why they dont make the interiors nicer but i still bought it.

Anyway love both...you should be happy with either....or both...

Comparing the 4th Gen 4.7 to the 5th Gen 4.0 is apples and oranges. The 4.7 was replaced by the 4.6 in the Tundra/Sequoia for 2010. Toyota wasn't deciding "do we keep an aging 4.7L architecture to compete with the 4.0", but rather "do we integrate a new 4.6L with the 5th gen?"

Instead of:
4th Gen 4.7 V8 - 260hp
5th Gen 4.0 V6 - 270hp

It's actually:
Tundra 4.6 V8 - 310hp
5th Gen 4.0 V6 - 270hp

From a user perspective, I don't see why Toyota would want to decontent the 5th Gen wrt a V8. You get more power, better towing, and very marginal mpg decrease. The EPA numbers for the 4.0 and 4.6 Tundra are the same. I didn’t realize the 4.6 is ~100 lbs heavier than the 4.0. Ouch. But, as a user, I don’t really care if I get more power and very similar mpg.

From Toyota’s side, I can really see why they dropped the V8. You lose significant integration cost. Might eek out some CAFE numbers, and none of your competitors offer a V8. If anything, the 4.0 offers better torque then the competitors 3.5/3.6L offerings (with the exception of the Acadia). I don’t think Toyota makes the 4.6 for a Toyota application in Japan, so you’d have to either ship engines from Huntsville, build a plant in Japan, or increase the Lexus line output in Japan. Those aren’t very palatable options, although Toyota does ship 4.0s from Japan to be assembled in Huntsville.

12 ltd 4runner owner thinking of trading in for 13 tundra 5.7 crewmax sr5. 4runner is great just would love that extra cargo room and extra power. Anyone else here did the jump any regrets? Advice? Thanks

I drive an '06 Accord. Looking to get a 4Runner in the near future. Joined the forum to access the vBulletin search , only to find it doesn't accept Boolean functions. D'oh!
