Turbo Charging A 4th Gen?????????

Faeylyn said:
If you use your 4Runner off road and do water crossings, you may want to reconsider this as an option unless they will warranty it for such situations.

regarding the air filter being submerged, they sell this:

Air Filter Relocation

STS(tm) Snorkel - $75 without an air filter, $125 with an air filter
The STS Snorkel relocates the air filter higher up in the rear quarter panel. It is available for Toyota and GM trucks.

not to sure if itll solve anything because by the time water is up to the filter, the turbo is probably submerged also.

True

But the turbo is sealed intake and exhaust, only thing about it is that turbo's get hot, really hot depending on which kind.

With the snorkel off roading would be more than fine, you could actually enhance the water fording height just simply due to the new location of the filter, exspecially with the snorkel.

However, I did recieve an email back today, about 2 hrs after I sent it.

Trevor, Thanks. It definitely looks like it could be a good market. Hopefully we can get to it next year sometime. Dave

From what this guy is saying, it could be a while, but next year is only two months away. It will be nice having options though, supercharger should be completed and back on the market soon, I would still prefer the turbo though. It'll probably depend on the price.

If they get more emails they would probably start looking into it quicker, and I know some of you have the cash now, I however don't:(

Wait it out

I guess we will just have to wait it out. I have a buddy that has had 2 or 3 Buick Grand National's and he knows A LOT about turbo's i was telling him about it and he thinks he can fabricate a system like this?????? NO telling and even though he is my friend i dont want him to test his "project" on my BRAND NEW runner! If you know what i mean

Gentlemen,

I got a reply from STS as well. The message reads:

"thanks for the interest. We are considering the 4runner but it
will not be until next year at the soonest. Thanks Dave

Sounds interesting!! I hope that their is an alternative to the Supercharger that TRD offers. If they know that they will competition in the Forced Induction market, then possibly we could see lower prices for both kits. Anyway, I will wait patiently!! Take care fella's!!

A few problems with the STS set-up oposed to making one yourself (or having a manifold made by someone else):
1. big time lag, by the time you punch the gas, the exhaust pressure has to get all the way back to the turbo, spool the turbo, then send it all the way back to the intake manifold.
2. quite a bit of pressure will be dropped from the turbo to the intake mani because of the 10 odd feet of exhaust piping then another 10 feet of intercooler piping.
3. $4000 oposed to getting a set-up made for around $2000....
4. I didn't see any injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, ECU chip, or any other necessary parts included.
5. The situation about it being colder air: true, it's far from the header-which is colder (but also less pressure). If you want cooler air, that's what an intercooler is for. The actual turbo temperature means very little, it's the air going into the engine.

Just my thoughts, anyone else? I think it's an awesome subject.

True

Yeah the kit does not come with injectors, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, ECU chip. As far as i know you only need the regulator and ECU which they do sell. Yeah its a great set up. The only thing with doing it your self is you would have to be REALLY handy with some cutting torches and things like that. Which me personally do not have access to. If you make your own system please let us know how it goes.

Justin

Basically, the only cutting or welding done is on the exhaust manifold (header). This is the part you have someone make, which may run around $300-$400. You pick the turbo flange for whatever turbo you'd like (mitsubishi, greddy, garrett). The rest is all you for tapping the head for oil, drilling a hole in the pan (very easy) to return the oil. Get an exhaust fabricated. If you plan on running about 8+ pounds of boost, an intercooler would help. There are many specifics. $4000 is a lot of money and placing a turbo at the end of your exhaust isn't NEARLY as productive as a turbo right at the source (engine).

I really dont think you could do one for less than the 4k. I had a friend who had one done for a porsche 968 and it ran 6k, welding and plumbing, the cost of a turbo, flashing the ecu. Plus, with our v8, you probably want to consider the exhaust pressure if you only use one bank of headers. The sts web site does mention ecu upgrades by unichip, and 190gph fuel pump upgrades if you run 6psi-thats for the tundra. Just about any turbo setup will have lag, and depending on the size of the turbo, will dictate the amount of lag. Smaller turbos spool up quickly, but lack top end power, and large ones are the opposite. I've run turbos since 1987 in various supras and porsches and saabs, in various trims from stock to a racing porsche. I must admit, the sts setup is very different, but an extremely viable, and relatively inexpensive option. The trd supercharger was 4700 before it was taken off the market, and it didn't include injectors or fuel pump upgrades other than the fmu, which on my 2000 supercharged 4runner, didn't do didly. I hope someone comes out with a product for our v8s soon!

My question would be, what would be involved in retro fitting the tundra setup to the 4runner.? Any thoughts?
Thanks

I have a couple of things. I don't think turbo lag will be much of a issue with 8 exhaust ports feeding it. If you did a single turbo setup, you would only have 4 exhaust ports feeding the turbo. Just think how much air our V8's push! I don't think STS would be selling kits if they had not thought of this before us?!?! (not arguing, just suggesting :D )

For $2000, you might get 60-70% of the parts needed to "turbo-charge" the 4Runner. Just think how much someone would charge us to do research on flashing the 4Runner ECU. I don't think anyone else has done anything like that, so its not going to be cheap. Custom fabbing intercooler pipes is not going to be cheap as well. I am almost certain that we would a intercooler. Has anyone ever paid attention to how much heat is given off after shutting our engine off?

I think that we would need to buy a FMU and we would be okay with the low-boost that the STS kit produces.

Oh, another issue that the STS gets around is emissions. We don't have to touch anything related emissions. Which is awesome for those who live in Smog-conscience cities.

Hope I made sense!! This is an awesome topic!!

You're right, only using 4 ports for exhaust flow on a single turbo set-up wouldn't produce huge numbers. I dunno. You'd estimate about $500 tops for a manifold, $700 tops for a turbo. Fabricating intercooler pipes isn't expensive unless you get a single piece aluminum pipe. Does anyone else think a turbo at the end of an exhaust isn't really practical?

Visit the site

Hey Babyman just curious if you went to there website(www.ststurbo.com) b/c the numbers are there from the dyno and the videos are all pretty impressive for only running a very little amount of boost. They have reasoning for why there is not any lag. Check it out and see what you think!

Intercooler pipes aren't expensive if you fab them yourself!! I think that 4 grand is fair. Granted I would like to see a cheaper price but........ Anyway, I would like to see competition for TRD. I think that if those two kits exist, we might see other companies jump on the band wagon. Anyway, have a great weekend guys!!!

I just got an email back from STS regarding the turbo for our vehicles. They mentioned they would put me in their data base for the 4runner, and when they do offer it, will let me know. Brady had mentioned that they do develop kits frequently, and didn't say it would be at least next year- which is a good thing. He also mentioned that they do have a universal kit that would cost more than the standard kit due to the fact that the kit would require custom fabrication, and if I was interested, he would put me in contact with one of their installers. I'm going to look into that option just to see if they would be willing to take the custom work required to fit it onto our trucks, and use that to develop a kit. Maybe, just maybe, we could speed up the process.:awais:

Update

Yeah i emailed dave at STS last week and sent him some recent pics with the new wheels and tires and such. I told him that i would be interested in being a investor/test vechile if it was in there best interest. I got a respose today saying that he appreciated the offer and that there was nothing in the works for a while but as he told some others he would put me in contact with someone local that could "custom" build a setup with the 05 tacoma turbo. But it wouldnt be a remote mount, it would be upfront like a traditional setup. So not to sure what "custom" means but we will see. I told him to get me that contact info and we will see what happens.
