Looking at picking up a second T4R. Came across an interesting turbo model. I know they made them for just a few years before coming out with the v6 options but other than that I have no experience with them. Other than being fairly rare, anything to know? Should I avoid them like the plague? Tuner's dream or maintenance nightmare?

Start doing some research on the 22RTE motors. Maintenance nightmare in my opinion. Bad turbo design, no intercooler, and the list goes on. Really cool motors if you can get them to run right but the 22RE was just never really designed for boost

I got a lucky deal on my 87 turbo 4Runner. I got the motor from a member here, it's machined to .020" over, ARP head studs, and a mild cam.
IMO, the N/A 22RE is slow as hell for anything larger than a 2WD pickup... The turbo helps a lot, but the motor won't make a whole lot of power without a whole lot of money. It is not a powerhouse. I'm at 6PSI on the 22RTE using a CT-26 Supra turbo.
Then again, im on 33" tires with 4.10s. A 7MGTE would have been a nice swap choice, you'll get far more power with the I6 turbo.

Would it make a difference if you used the early 22r block with the 20r heads or does the 22ret intake not bolt to the 20r heads? We are getting ready to do some work on my brothers 1st gen and he has the early 22r in it
Thanks everyone for your responses. I kinda figured this was going to be the direction it went. When a company slaps a turbo on a NA engine and then replaces it two years later it usually is a bandaid hp fix to keep up with competition until a newer more powerful engine takes its time through development. I skipped the turbo model in the end and getting just an '84 22r. Time will tell if I leave that or just slap in a 3.4.

Do not waste the money on a 22re turbo. It's not worth it no matter how much money you spend the 22re platform will never produce any performance with the cost.
HP per $ is always the goal and the 22re can't make it happen In any way.
