turbocharger?

hey stick would you say a mitsubishi eclipse turbo not sure of the trim code but I know they're only good for like 8psi could do the trick in a sts knock off application? also what would you recommend for tuning on these 4runners on boost? chip burn or O2 sensors or what? any help would be great.

For tuning, a standalone engine managment is best, but piggy backs work fine for the low boost we typically run on these motors. There is a unit called the MAPECU2 that works great. It controls timing, 02 sensor for closed loop tuning, additional injectors, MAF signal to control your primary injectors, you can run a MAP sensor in place of your MAF if you build the motor and run higher boost, it can run nitrous etc.... It is also easy to tune with graphical and table views.

I agree w/ Greedy on a stand alone is best, but probably not needed. You can get away w/ a piggy back, however some things to remember.

Figure out who is going to tune it, and ask them what they prefer. Even the best system w/ someone that isn't familiar w/ it will either not run as good as it could, or take longer to get to that point, causing your price of tuning to go up.

The other thing w/ the piggy back style solution is that partial throttle tuning is key. When the computer is in closed loop reading off of the o2 sensor if you go into boost and go rich, the computer will not like it and adjust the a/f. Most ECU's will apply this adjustment to the open loop maps as well. That is how you run into lean conditions at WOT and damage engines.

As far as the mitsubishi turbos ... the 1G came w/ a 14b (manual trans) and the second gen came w/ a T25. the T25 isn't even worth thinking about unless you are getting a pair of them. The 14b is still far on the small side for the 3.4 displacement we are talking about (unless you have a 4cyl) If you are looking for a cheap junkyard turbo solution for a turbo, i would probably look towards the MA70 Supras. They are pretty easily found in the yards, and came w/ a decent sized turbo. (roughly T3 sized) In fact i think i have a couple of these in storage ..... hmmmm although i really did want to keep the 4runner street legal for daily driving in CA :( There are better turbo choices available aftermarket of course, but if you are trying to do this on the cheap that would be my suggestion.

Yeah - the part throttle/closed loop is a pain with most piggybacks. The MAPECU has an "02 adjust" function where it intercepts and adjusts the 02 voltage to trick the stock ecu in closed loop. It works pretty good with the turbo, but works much better in a more linear boost ramp like a supercharger.

On a side note, I have a near-new T3/T4 .63 A/R Turbonetics Ceramic ball bearing turbo with a stage 5 wheel that I will probably be selling. Worked great on my 5vz with minimal lag and still room on the top end..

hey thanks guys. I've been doing alot of reseach in boosting my acura integra and now since the subject came up here why not learn from some pro's about my 4runner. once again thanks for the info.

integras easy .... t3/t4 50 trim-ish is about perfect for them, for engine management check out PGMFI.org you can reprogram the stock OBD1 honda ECUS for pretty much free and the run just like factory turbo cars when tuned right.

Greedy what kind of price are you thinking on the turbo?

It doesn't look like I can PM on here. I paid $1300 new for it and it only has about 10,000 miles on it. It will also come with a 7psi wastegate acuator, and the 5-bolt to 3 inch v-band transition ( http://www.atpturbo.com/root/releases/release103105.htm )

Asking $1000 obo....
