Turn DRL ON/OFF on 2007 T4R

New member
Am looking for a method, such as a secret handshake, rub my tummy, pat my head, open/close doors, put key in the ignition multiple times , to be able to turn on/off the DRL without going to the dealer/stealer.

I've had ithe DRL turned off by the dealer, but am wondering if there is a method to turn the DRL on/off w/o dealer. (I already know about the parking brake - that's not what I'm looking for.)

I'm interested in an easy do it yourself way too. I also had the dealer turn my DRLs off when I got it. It would be nice to be able to turn them on/off anytime.
 
Thanks CXS. Wasn't particularly what I was looking for, but it is an interesting mod.

Was hoping for a "secret Toyota handshake" that does not requiring modifying the wiring. Kind of like making a new master key.

Could do it like the dealer if I had a laptop, a cable and TIS TechStream, but haven't got to the point of buying it yet.
 
Gotcha! I like this method myself. Throw a switch and they're on or off, can't get much easier.
 
I don't believe in them, for one. Also, the DRL and the turn signal lamp are the same lamp in some 4runners. I prefer to use my turn signals as turn signals instead of using them for DRLs and turn signals. Also, if I drive at nite, stop, keep my engine running, turn off the lights, then the DRLs come on (which I don't want). Same goes for starting the engine and warming up the vehicle; the DRLs come on (unless I set the parking brake). I wish Toyota would of given us a method to turn them on/off easier; but basically my reason is I am not a believer in DRLs.
 
I didn't know people were that annoyed with them.

Nevertheless, though I like mine, this mod would be helpful. I like the switch the guy used and how he painted it and added his own letters. I'm guessing those letters don't light up though...

Not tryin to be a **** but you..."don't believe in them?" Again not trying to be a **** but u are saying that u don't believe that lights do their job and light things up....is there a different product u have been working on with NASA that u want to let us know about....maybe a flux capacitor?? All these years I thought lights created.....light and I never thought that u had a better idea.

If u would have said,...l don't like the way they look," I wouldn't agreed but wouldn't have been so harsh...you say u don't believe in them basically u r saying you don't believe in people observring your vehicle at a distance, tinting in front of them, and that all laws of thermodynamics are void based on your new "headlights don't produce light theory" etc....u jus actin' a foo
 
U "don't believe in them"....weird....not sure what u "don't believe in"....there lights.....do u believe in headlights at night??
 
I HATE the DRLs and I will terminate them. Last night my family and I were at the drive-in movie and it was humid outside so occasionally I had to start the engine to defog the windows...and every time I started the engine the freaking DRLs came on and lit up the insides of the vehicles parked in front of me. (&)%$&###% I know those people had to be pissed. I would have been. But I couldn't turn them off!

What a stupid idea to make it to where you cannot turn off the exterior lights with the engine running. I can think of a bunch of reasons this is a stupid idea but it's not worth going there.

Bottom line is mine will be terminated. I'm just trying to come up with the best way to do it. Anybody have any new and/or better ways to do this?
 
If I remember correctly you could have pressed the emergency brake to turn them off, if you needed to start the car but keep them off.
 
This is an intresting thread. I'm gonna give my outlook on the aftermarket side as I deal with lighting options for vehicles. I've concentrated most of my work on tacomas and now expanding to the 4rs. I currently have led turn signals in my truck the right way. The reason why I say that is because on the tacomas the drl is controlled by the flasher relay. Now I haven't seen the flasher relay on a 4r with drl but could it be that all they do is change out the relay? My truck doesn't have drls , but I would like to know myself so I can help those who ask for kits and upgrades. For those that don't know the flasher relay is located exactly behind the fuse box in the driver side panel.

Martini is right about the parking brake. One click will do it so the truck can even be driven with them off.
 
I followed the instructions on the 3rd post and added a non-stock switch because I didn't feel like spending big bucks on a switch. Great mod!

 
Wow... so all you have to do is set the P brake and the DRLs will not come on? I feel like an idiot now. LOL. That would be perfect for most situations where you don't want them on. Thanks for the tip. I'll go try that.

Perhaps what isn't being said in this thread by those opposed to T4R DRLs is they want to be stealthy at night; you know, like stalking someone or doing some other mischievous stuff...
