turpentine to clean out gunk better than seafoam?

Mechanic I was talking to said instead of removing the crank case and everything else to clean gunk, just use a quart and drive for 5 minutes then change the oil and filter.

Ever hear of this?

My truck had 65K miles when I bought her (99 4cyl, 2.7L) and I have no idea how it was treated before I got it.

I cannot see anything good happening from adding turpentine to the crankcase. It provides nearly zero lubrication and because it is the distillate of plant resins would probably make the problem worse. The high temps found in an engine will cause it to evaporate and leave gums and varnishes behind.

I am not sure if the 2.7 is one of the engines vulnerable to sludge buildup.
