I wasn't going to do one of these until further along but figured why not. Let's start from, well, the start.
I've always loved the looks of the 5th gen but had never even been in one until recently. I had a basic idea of what they were like and all about but never seriously considered one. About a month ago a coworker bought a TRD Pro Tacoma and talking to him about it he made the comment, "It isn't the best at anything but it is pretty close to it at everything and it will do that forever." For whatever reason it got me shopping.
Went and test drove them, poked around them, decided it was the right move. With lots of research on here about options, models, pricing, and buying technique I managed to pick up a 2018 TRDOR for less than $35k. I had a nearly full price cash offer on my current truck but to my surprise, the dealership offered almost as much in trade in. Once they saw it they really seemed to want it. An hour later I was leaving in my 4Runner. (If anyone wants help shopping, I got two more from different dealerships offered to me via email the next day for under $35k.)
At the dealership parked next to my RAM so we could move all my crap over.
Now I'll admit my build is probably going to be boring compared to some. There are some badass rigs on here and I've somewhat followed Lawndart's since he shared a picture of it on the car transport being delivered. I would love to go all out but I can't. I'm a realist and know this rig will spend 95% of it's life on the road getting me to work and my family where we need to go. That being said, I can't own something that at least stands out from most on the road and I want to really enjoy that 5% of the time I'm not on pavement.
To give a little history on my vehicular hobbies, I've owned import cars (Civics, SI's, Type R's, etc.), a couple full size trucks, a pretty custom lowered astro van, still own a body dropped and bagged minitruck that is totally shaved, and the most similar vehicle was a decently built Jeep Cherokee XJ. I loved that XJ. I bought it bone stock with the goal of never putting it on a trailer while being able to go anywhere I wanted to. I succeeded but also learned that it was not easy or cheap. I ended up with about 6"of lift, 4.56 gears, lockers on both ends, mild armor, and drove it almost 20k miles a year.
My last rig was a 2014 RAM 1500, Hemi, 8 speed, 4x4 Crew Cab with drop springs in the rear. Basic bolt ons, Magnaflow exhaust that sounded more perfect than any other I've ever heard, and a custom 92 octane tune from Hemifever that really woke the thing up. It was a hoot to drive.
