two nuts lost!

so, for some reason when my truck went in for its 15k service ( see horror story: http://yotatech.com/showthread.php?t=35334 ), it came back missing the two nuts that secure the hood latch handle to the grill area.

the head of the bolt is 10mm, but i can't figure out what size nut i now need in order to secure the latch to the grill with the two bolts.

does anyone know what size nuts those require???

What part are you actually talking about cause I lost a bolt that held up my skid plate that you have to remove in order to get to the oil filter, realized you gotta put those things in tight.

The dealer should replace the bolts for you.

oh man, i know what you mean ... when i took the skid plates off to clean them a few weeks ago, i put them back on realllly tight because i don't ever want to have to mess with that again!!

as far as the part i'm talking about, you know how inside the vehicle, you pull the hood release and it pops the hood a bit ... but then you have to go pull the little latch at the front of the hood in order to full release/open the hood?

well, that little latch is attached right there by two bolts ... those two bolts should have two nuts to keep them secured there, and keep the handle secured ... i'm missing those two nuts.

i'm sorry i don't know the correct terms to describe what i'm talking about ... but can you picture it, sort of?

I've heard of people bending over and 'taking it' when they pay the bill $$$$$$$$ at the dealer but.....

haha, well, luckily the only nuts of mine they could ever find to steal are the actual ones on the vehicle! that being said ... always take pepper spray!

4Route ... if you can post a pic of the location(s) where the nuts are missing, I'll see if I can find the part number for you. I've got the repair manuals and the parts lists.

I feel for ya, 4Route!

The dealer I was with also gave me great anxiety. My rig was in their shop for 34 days when they screwed up replacing my headliner! Only last week did they finally give me the 3 remaining parts they broke in the process -- broke during the end of March! I'm so pissed at them and will be trying another one for the next maintenance --- God help me!

FWIW, the "Passport to Performance -- 2003 Scheduled Maintenance Guide" (page 27) does in fact indicate that they are to inspect all the areas you wrote of, and more. If you don't have a copy of the Toyota guide, I can send it (pdf 1.7MB).

I'd ride the stealer till they provide the service that 1) you paid for and 2) Toyota's warranty requires. The latter will come back to haunt you in time.

The parts manual doesn't list the screws, just the whole latch. However, maybe the attached repair manual page will help. I'll check mine tomorrow and repost.

I'd have to actually take a look at mine tomorrow, but from the pdf that 4route posted, it looks like the bolts thread into either some type of 'nutsert', or nuts that are welded to the grill support. Why in the H##l did they take the hood release off in the first place. And if it was already off, how did you get the hood open?

EDIT: They are BOLTS that belong there, no nuts. The plate attatched to the grill has through holes and the hood release lever is threaded to the plate using bolts. No nuts.

M6 x 10mm Metric specification (of course it's Japanese).
You will find these at Home Depot or even Sears hardware stores. Get metric Cap scews if you can't find the hexagon head bolts. Use metric lockwashers to keep them in place and even some blue threadlock compound. Even if you can't get the correct length (10mm) you can cut down alonger one with a cut-off wheel (bench grinder or Dremel).

I measured the diameter of the bolt , it's almost .236 inches (6mm ).

Actually, I am suprised they came out. I would think they would have to be taken out manually as they do have lockwashers on them. Mine does anyway. Maybe the mechanic needed to adjust the hood release, took them out and got distracted??? Sounds implausible but dumb things happen. You should't have to replace them yourself.

I went to Home Depot to look for a 10mm nut, but then when I found them, I realized it would be too big. The screws/bolts are still in there, I'm just missing the nuts... so you think 6mm?

A Picture to Clarify

This is a good picture. It shows the bolts through the plate and threaded into the latch mechanism. As long as nothing is missing except the bolts, then (2) M6 X 10mm should do the trick. Even M6 bX 20 would fit, you would have extra sticking out but no big deal.

Another one not as good

Here's another picture, shows both threaded bolts through into the latch plate but not the hex bolt heads. Try for stainless steel bolts if possible. Zinc plated is ok but they will eventually rust, might take many year though.

at home depot, i went out to my truck to grab one of the bolts so i could take it in to fit something to it, but it turns out you can't pull the bolts out from the latch part ... it's weird. i can't explain.

You just confused me by saying you couldn't take a bolt into Home Depot?? If you have the bolts, what are you missing???

i see why you are confused ... ours fit differently. see the part hanging here with the bolts through it? that part has been sitting BELOW the part which is actually attached to the grill. so it's BELOW the part that yours is above ...

why?

and when i pulled the bolts out with a ratchet just now, and tried to place the hanging black piece on top of the grill piece (so that it would be arranged like yours is) it wouldn't fit that way ... i cannot get the black piece on top, i can only get it to fit below, and then when it does that, it of course won't tighten into anything.

thanks so much for the pictures you posted ... i had to take some of it apart, and was able to put it back together in a way that allowed it to go back together the way yours shows. anyway, it's fixed now, thank goodness!

i wonder who put it like that though? i've never taken that piece apart other than when i was putting the bug shield on, and i put it back the way it was supposed to be ... but then after i got it back from the dealer this time, it was loose and wouldn't go back together correctly.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. My bet is some "ID TEN T" at the dealer was suppose to work on someone elses vehicle latch and ended up messin' with yours in err. If you had a hard time figuring out how to put it back, just imagine the poor "qualified" sob that was working on it in at the dealers!
